Hi,

we have an ADSL WiFi router in our home and now a neighbour (relative) bought a budget PC (20K) for his granddaughter.

Since they have only one phone line and no funds for ADSL I suggested that they can share our connection.

Their house is about 30mtr from ours but there is an other building in between.

My son used his PSP and Nintendo in their house and could log on to our WiFi but got a very weak signal.

What kind of WiFi card should I look for, internal or USB, external high-gain antennae?

What is readily available in BKK and what are the costs?

Can anybody suggest some models I should look for (as powerful as possible yet as cheap as possible)?

May you need to install an better antenna with 8 or 10 dB gain! That should do the job. I use a 10 dB antenna with connection until 800 m without any obstraction and around 200-300 with some houses between. But my antenna is grounded seperatly as well and it's an Outdoor Antenna!

As a start get a USB WiFi dongle and a 2m extension lead so you can do some moving around to find the best signal, get your router into the best position too, high up and with as few walls as possible between it and the computer. Hi gain antennae on your router would also be a smart move (not cheap though).

If your in-between neighbours are amenable why not run a network cable to the other house, good for 100m and infinitely reliable :o

What is building in-between made of?

There's a colleague at work asking my suggestions for piggy backing her neighbor's (landlord) ADSL connection since the landlord is only 30 meters away and amiable to the idea. She is renting the neighbor's house for 3 months for trial and it does not have an active phone in it (owner not willing to reactivate without a one year lease). Also, no wireless in the landlord's house.

So I said the easiest route is to run a UTP Cat 5 cable between the two and the ADSL modem is a 4 port router so easy to setup. My colleague said that the technician stated that it won't work, 10 meters max. :o I then pointed out the standards of 100 meters and I have a 90 meter cable running between our two research buildings. So she will be going this route. Not recommended for long term unless you encase the cat 5 cable for weather and animal protection, but 3 months won't be an issue.

Crossy and tywais are correct and that is the cheapest solution.

But there is the question for how long that connection should be used?! If for longer time, you'll need to use a much better Netcable as the "normal" CAT5! Special if the cable is in "open Air" because the insulation isn't good enough for outdoor using!

A good outdoor Network Cable cost around that much as a high gain antenna will cost, by an distance from around 30 m and if the distance is mor the cost of cable is higher! While using the antenna, the use of the existing Access point is an easy tuch! On the other hand while using cable you'll need to fixing the cable from your house to the other! Cost work and time and money as well!

I agree that 'weatherizing' the CAT5 can get expensive and a medium gain antennae is probably the best route for him. I remember posts on here before about the antennaes and believe they are around 6,000 B? Not sure if you need one on both ends then it will be around 12k. Then the mounting pole internal to external cabling, etc. I did a search on the Internet once about building your own and saw some easy to build high gain (up to 20dB) antennaes if one has some mechanical skills.

No, you don't need on both side! The setup I've done with my Laptop on the "movable" side while the antenna was on the Access Point side. The cost of an good Outdoor Antenna with an gain of 8 B is just Baht 3,000.00 and can be found at Pantip Plaza on 3. and 4. Floor.

Thanks, wasn't sure about the receive and transmit gain being equal. 3,000.00 sounds quite good.

Thanks for all your advise. :o

Just figured out that WiFi won't work (weak/no signal due to building in between).

Since this is more a charity for our neighbours I'm not going to invest in upgrading our system or making major changes to our installation (we have a Billion router BIPAC 5102G located inside our house).

We'll go the LAN cable route. About 40mtr and the portions (2 times 3mtr) exposed to the environment will be put into PVC piping.

They (our neighbours) are not concerned about speeds but rather about what they have to pay (free if we connect them to our LAN) and the fact that they can't use the phone when online.

The PC has been bought primarily for their 7yo granddaughter.

Fine if you use cable! Anyway better than WiFi! For the PVC piping use yellow pipe because it indicates that there running communication cable inside. Gray pipes are for powercable. If you have, use CAT5e instead of CAT5 because of the distance above 30 m (100 ft.) which is max. for CAT5 while CAT5e is good up tor 100 m (300 ft). The best one will be STP CAT5e (shielded ...) because interferences can having an effect to your network!

Anyway the phone line is still free for calling if using ADSL!! While using ADSL there is not any calling chargimng for internet connection.

Sorry but not correct >

CAT-5 is rated to 100M

CAT-5e is rated to 350M (at 100MHz, 100M at 1GHz)

CAT-5e components were designed with high-speed gigabit Ethernet in mind. While CAT-5 components may function to some degree in a gigabit Ethernet, they perform below standard during high-data transfer scenarios. CAT-5e cables work with ATM and gigabit speed products.

More details here > http://safari.oreilly.com/0672328321/ch02lev1sec2

However, if the cost difference is insignificant then CAT5e for better noise immunity and loading. CAT5 will not be an issue at 40 meters, I'm running it at our lab between two facilities at nearly 95 meters for several years now with no problems (even going over a machine shop with high power machinery).
