We bathed the baby today and I noticed she had large what looked like bruises on the top part of her bum cheeks:

I asked the wife she said all babies get like that, well I not seen babies with what looks like bruises on her rump. Any input:

Is this where she lays or what, she never goes anywhere only sometimes to wifes mum's but wife with her.

Is it a Thai Baby? If yes it's quite normal. Thai friends in Sydney I know had a baby with looked like bruises also. Ask any Thai person. They do go away eventually.

The blue bum is quite common in Asian babies, even luk kreung.

Yahoo answers has something about it here: . They are calling it a mongolian blue spot.

Mediline has the info:

Alternative names

Mongolian spots; Congenital dermal melanocytosis; Dermal melanocytosis

Definition

Mongolian spots are flat bluish or bluish-gray skin markings that commonly appear at birth or shortly thereafter.

Causes, incidence, and risk factors

Mongolian blue spots are common among darker-skinned races, such as Asian, East Indian, and African. They are flat, pigmented lesions with unclear borders and irregular shape. They appear commonly at the base of the spine, on the buttocks and back. They may also can appear as high as the shoulders and elsewhere. Mongolian spots are benign skin markings and are not associated with any conditions or illnesses.

Occasionally, Mongolian blue spots are mistaken for bruises and questions about child abuse arise. It is important to recognize that Mongolian blue spots are birthmarks, NOT bruises.

Symptoms

* Bluish or blue-gray spots on the back, buttocks, base of spine, or elsewhere

* Bruise-like coloration

* Pigmented area has normal skin texture

* May cover a large area of back

Other

* More likely in darker-skinned races

* Generally disappears by puberty

Don't worry, I've seen it in lots and lots of kids. Its normal :o

My wife is a pain in the arse too!

Our daughter,Emily is 16 months and half Thai and has had the marks as weel.Asked the wife a few times about it in the past,and as said above,just a normal occurance.

to be safe,let her change the nappies,and bo the bathing and you'll never notice it again.

My 3 year old has them too. I think its normal in all babies regardless of ethnicity.

Thought you would've freaked out more about the pulsating soft spot on top the head like my husband did :o

I am astonished that it's taken so long for you to notice, how old is she now? Actually, I am not that surprised, my man was shocked to see our first born had eyebrows, that was about 7 weeks after she was born. She was very fair, but there is no excuse for that! :o

Probably the reason why I had not noticed is because there was nothing to notice:

And maybe because I been to busy washing Nappies, but seriously they have not been there till about a week ago, then I thought I know I will get myself into the Family area on here.

THanks everyone for your instant supportive comments your all invited round for a BBQ ooooooooops what did I say :D

Well I don't think my Topic indicated that I was Freaking out out the Blues Club :D

THe pulsing on the head I am aware of its called the Fontanella ,(If I spealt it right) it closes as the three plates form and grow on the skull.

See I do know some knowledgable things about babies
