Trump doubts North Korea leader will break promises on denuclearization

ABOARD AIR FORCE ONE (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump said on Sunday he did not expect North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to break his promise about denuclearization, but conceded that he might.

Kim Jong Un said last week there were no longer grounds for Pyongyang to be bound by a self-declared moratorium on intercontinental ballistic missile and nuclear bomb testing and that a "new strategic weapon" would be introduced in the near future.

"I don't think he'd break his word to me, but maybe he will," Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington after a two-week stay in Florida.

Trump - who in 2018 became the first sitting U.S. president to meet with a North Korean leader - said after Kim's comments that the North Korean leader had signed a denuclearization contract and Trump thought Kim was a "man of his word."

Last month, Pyongyang warned Washington of a possible "Christmas gift" after Kim gave the United States until the end of the year to propose new concessions in talks over his country's nuclear arsenal.

Speaking with reporters last week, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley said the alert status of American forces was at a sufficient level to respond to anything that happens and military defensive capabilities were adequate to defend the United States.

...and I doubt a lot about President Trump! Including his ability to tie his shoes!

  • I'm sure Kim's word is just as good as Donald's.

Unfortunately Trump has really no success in any foreign policies. So I will laugh this one off. Silly man.

His own intelligence agencies have proof Kim has kept right on working his work on missile systems, or accelerated them.  He doesn’t want to hear the truth that doesn’t fit his taste, so he degrades those that are experts to fit his ego stories.  Maybe he should read the history of North Korea leaders-oh, I forgot, he doesn’t read ????

So your "solution" is to just give up trying new things?

the fact that USA now openly assassinate

leaders of other nations is a very good reason to build

a nuclear deterrent with a reliable delivery system.

this is an entirely new policy in human history

No but just don’t depend on his own instinct and unconventional thinking. Try working with the experts and not by himself.

might it also be perceived as an incentive to denuclearize?  iran is significantly stronger than n korea

Depending on the experts has resulted in years of nothing happening.  Whilst they are not to blame, Kim III has developed nuclear weapons over this time.   Seems like at least trying something would be a better option, no?

Even trying something would need consultation and joint effort like the previous 6 parties talks. Getting Kim into some sort of honorable brotherly agreement is not a plausible option. It’s even seem rather naive and wishful.

He should off him now just to see what happens. ????????????????

Actually there were times in the past when N. Korean nuclear development was checked due to negotiations.

But, no, doing something blatantly stupid like putting yourself in an unfavorable negotiating position as Trump did with North Korea, is not better than doing nothing. But once Trump put his prestige on the line, he has done nothing but deny the obvious.

no, it would literally be suicide do dismantle nukes,

as former libyan ruler could attest to if he were alive

He gave me some really good chocolates. And he told me how wonderful I am. Kim really likes me alot. Why would he lie to me? I have such a unique relationship with truth, that I can tell when people are lying to me. He was being honest and he is an honest and kind dictator. He will not defy me. Why would anyone want to defy me? I am great and powerful. He will play nice. I negotiated a deal that insisted on his kindness and consideration. And you all know how skilled I am.

trump has difficulty understanding bigly words.

kim made absolutely NO promise regarding denukularization.

the agreement the two made was to simply promise to continue discussions regarding negotiations covering a timeline to study possibly eventually completely denukularizing the korean peninsula.

there is NO requirement, no agreement, for kim to cease improving north korea's deterrent.

the temporary halt in nukular testing and long-range rocket tests was in exchange for a temporary halt in wargames with south korea.

And the elephant in the room is a certain Mr. Xi.

Maybe that's how it will turn out.  But what has been lost in trying?

Kim made a "pledge" to work “toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.”

There was also no promise to stop testing.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2019/12/09/why-trumps-strong-denuclearization-agreement-with-kim-jong-un-turned-out-be-so-weak/

There were no specific timetables for specific goals to be verified and/or met.

Given the weakness and lack of clarity in the literal language of the Singapore agreement, one might that Kim hasn't yet violated the agreement.

While Trump is credited for the Art of a Deal, Kim can be credited for the Art of the Con.
