Back to my original point, if the government were to iffer a form of financial assistance to every house in the country to build a rain water storage tank, I strongly believe that this panic and worry in times of drought could be seriously alleviated.

Tooth brushing can last even longer, just keep water tap closed and use a glass with water to rinse.

Even shower can be done with closed water and the open just to rinse hair and body from soap and shampoo

I shower like that a lot, even in the water wonderland of the USA. That allows me to lovingly and sensually stroke and soap my entire naked, glistening, jiggling and blubbery body over and over and over and oooooooooover, so I can just luxuriate in the lather before I rinse it off. I have seen any discussion about grey water recyling for either new build houses or condo blocks, especially for gardens, and toilets.

Integrated on new builds is inexpensive and can also use reed filtration.

If the government tells these people not to grow a second crop of rice, and thus face even greater financial hardship, then the politicians must come up with an alternative - otherwise they won't be in office too much longer. 

It's one thing for the masses to be poor, but another when they are poor AND hungry.

We were studying climate change and weather in geography with my Year 6 class last term and these were some of the simplistic and rather unhygienic answers some of the kids suggested. We concluded that something like this was ultimately unfeasible and people would soon forget, therefore making little difference.

Rice cultivation actually consumes a lot of water, but that of maize  even more;
and I see more and more culture of this vegetable ..
In fact the Thais completely ignore government directives; the only thing that interests them is: me, me, me first ...

 

You forgot all  the golf courses ;

only  a single golf course uses as much water per day as an average city of 30,000 inhabitants;
and you also forgot about the hundreds of thousands of car wash facilities ...

without counting all the individuals who wash their car or pickup at home;
I ride a MTbike every morning and not a day goes by without seeing these establishments or individuals washing their vehicles with plenty of water

Last year's rainy season was so meager and the fall army worm did so much damage to crops, especially corn, that many of the farmers now planting crops are doing so out of desperation, not greed.

 

My next door neighbor is an excellent example. Last year his first planting of corn had to be tilled under when it was about 12-18" high because it had wilted in the drought. The rains finally came, he replanted the corn, but before the corn started to flower, the rains stopped again. The fall army worm, a caterpillar which burrows into the corn stalk and kills the plant did a number on crop yields as well. Last year was the year this invasive species really made its presence known and any farmer who was slow to respond paid a steep price, losing anywhere from 25% to the entire crop.

 

At age 84 and still working his fields, he also has to support a largely housebound spouse, and is probably financially helping out his daughter-in-law and his three granddaughters, one of whom is autistic. His son started driving truck for a Saraburi cement company a couple of years ago because he couldn't make ends meet on farm income alone. I'm guessing my neighbor may have had 100,000 in net farm income last year, quite possibly, far less. He is now desperately trying to recoup some of his losses by growing squash during the cool season, something he has never done before.

 

Forum members living in urban areas may not realize this but in many regions of Thailand ground water depletion is a major problem. Municipal water systems are often regularly turned off some times for days or weeks at a time. Almost all major reservoirs are already very low, as are many rivers. It's a very real problem which is not going to go away any time soon. People need to take calls for water conservation far more seriously than has generally been reflected on this thread so far.

 

Is this the same type of wisdom the Thais officials have?  when drunk drive slower?  it isn't take less showers it is shorten the shower time, instead of 3 scoops cut it to 2 or even one.????

Time to buy some de-salination plants. Here in Perth  a lot of our water comes from the de-salination plants. Got too many people here now. Presume rice growing and Songkhran will carry on as usual and maybe spraying water in the air when the smoke comes.

Prayut should have a chat with his ChiCom buddies.  Look what they’ve done to the Mekong River...

I'm living near the ChakNok reservoir, it's almost empty. But nobody asks the Thais not to wash their cars in the reservoir and not to burn the waste thrown near the water that remains.

... meanwhile the  rice farmers are on their second production of growing rice during the dry season by pumping water from the rivers and let us not forget  Songkron that will waste water.

I'd be more inclined to give up meat produced from the torture, abuse, exploitation and death of animals.  Animal agriculture is the major water user. Estimated at 5000 - 20000 litres to produce 1 kg.  Not to mention that it takes about 6kg of plant protein to produce 1kg of animal protein. It is ridiculous to suggest that reducing tooth brushing time will save us from disaster.
