Much has been written about the attitude of the Immigration Officers at Suvarnabhumi. I would like to add my latest experience to this topic. On Saturday I had a same day round trip From Bangkok to KL and return. When I arrived in KL, I was greeted by a smiling Malaysian Immigration Official who first asked me how my flight was even before she looked at my documents. She continued her pleasant conversation as she examined my passport and arrival card. When she stamped my passport, she wished me a pleasant stay in Malaysia, and said that I should come back and stay longer the next time.

Contrast this to my return to Bangkok later that night. Welcome to the "Land of Frowns". The immigration officer was sullen and non-communicative. I had to expressly point out my re-entry permit because he was about to give me a VOA. I thanked him when he finished and got no reply. He tossed my passport back to me with obvious disdain. Either this guy has not yet been scheduled to take the "Smiles Course" that has been initiated for surly Immigration Officers or he flunked the course.

So will Suvarnabhumi ever become the preferred regional hub? I seriously doubt it.

Land of Frowns.

I encontered this sort of rude and unbecoming behaviour of Thai immigration officer (not fit to be an immigration officer). This happened to me one early morning at the Danok Immigration at the Malaysian Bukit Kayu Hitam border crossing.

I gave him my passport, he looked at me as if I owe him a living, and he rudely pointed at me to move my body here and there. I did what he told me to do. He lost his temper and again rudely instructed me to move my body here and there. At that moment I realised that there was a web cam camera infront of his immigration booth....... he was too lazy to move and adjust his web cam. I even said ' Khap khon " and he did not even bothered to answer me.

On my way back, this time the lady officer was more understanding. She just adjusted the web cam to suit my standing position and thats it.

Another incident. This time at arrival at Suvarnabhumi airport. I was standing a bit to the left of this serious and unsmiling lady immigration officer. She pointed to me to stand directly in front of her in a very unfriendly attitude. She can't open her mouth. Her mouth is made of gold.

Oh yes, the Malaysian Immigration are always very friendly and polite. When I say thank you, they will always smile and say ' welcome ' to Malaysia.

High time they send these Thai Immigration officers for a refresher course in Malaysia.

I don't really care, although I always try to be nice. If no response I might call a**hole, albeit in an European dialect not generally understood.
