New Chinese Coronovirus Arrives in Thailand

Featured Replies

A popular news agency has reported the following on January 15, 2020 / 2:28 PM

A Chinese woman from Wuhan has been quarantined in Thailand, the first case of the mystery strain of coronavirus to be detected outside of China. This virus is a killer. WHO has said there has been human-to-human transmission. [L8N29J2O2]

With Chinese New Year here, beware of Chinese tourists!

Actually there is a horrible virus making the rounds in Phnom Penh (which has a huge number of Chinese) and people are saying it is the Chinese virus, but this is unconfirmed.

I know quite a few people ill with it.

What are the symptoms?

High fever, severe cough, aches and pains etc.

Clinically indistinguishable from ordinary cold or flu  except for  the severity and sheer numbers getting it. No guarantee that what is going round in PP is this as opposed to regular cold or flu strain, would take sophisticated lab tests to know.

It can progress to pneumonia but does not always. Most of the cases identified in China (and the one here in Thailand) have pneumonia but that may just be because it is the severe cases that get identified.  Normally with something like this, for every identified case there are many more that don't get identified and those are usually less severe.

No link to the OP?

There was one Chinese woman who was quarantined, recovered and went home but that was earlier.

Little alarmist to say 'virus arrives in Thailand.'

This is the one I was thinking of Sheryl:

One and the same. 1 case (known) reported on Monday the 13th

Given the degree of travel between China and SEA there is not going to be any keeping this within borders. However it is not yet clear how easily transmitted it is. The original cluster in China all worked at or frequented the samw fish market.

There was a report from one of my Facebook friends that she was at the Chiang Mai Ram A&E on January 14 and they were swamped with Chinese tourists from Wuhan who were brought in from the airport with elevated temperatures.  The hospital staff had them contained in a "sealed" room and were treating them in what she described as "full hazmat suits".  Probably a little over-dramatic, but obviously the hospital isn't taking any chances.

Yes, it does seem like these tourists should be screened at the airports in China rather than after they arrive in Thailand.
