I have a dog about five months old, she has her own cage where she is kept in at night and is protected from mosquitos, last night for the first time, she has cried nearly all night, she does not get put in her cage until

about 9pm till about 6.30am. This is maybe my fault as it kept hammering my door, I have my own small room downstairs, I let her sleep in there for about an hour then went upstairs to bed, anyone know what I can do?

Had the same problem with my dog.. i was weak gave in and from now till the end of time will he sleep up in my bedroom on the floor. When he was young he would cry all night if i would not let him up. He would gnaw through fences whatever to get up to the bedroom.

I have a very strong opinion on this O/P, which you probably won't like.

I have long held that chaining or caging a dog amounts to animal cruelty. Dogs are first and foremost social creatures. Deprive them of the company of their 'pack' and they become a sad and lonely creature and with experience, one can even recognize the whine of a forlorn dog. I've heard it many times.

I don't advocate having a dog sleeping on the bed, but it needs to know that you, his alpha male, is close by. Only then will it feel safe and secure.

Put her in a box of rolled up socks. The socks mimic her siblings.

Maybe worth trying. Thanks.

It is only caged at night for it's own protection, the last dog we had was bothered by mosquitos and these things that bury itself into their hair.

I hope you've explained that clearly to your dog!

I'd be curious to know how a cage stops mosquitoes and ticks getting to the poor creature. Have you tried tick powder and mosquito coils?

You have a point, but the real reason I had a cage built was because the last dog I had ran away because it was frightened by fireworks at the new year last year then returned after 4 days.

He is right.

Uncage the dog or, if the issue is that he is still not housebroken, then make it a big cage and in your bedroom at night so he can see, hear and smell that you are nearby.

So cage the dig only when fireworks are going off,  and you for some reason can't simply shut the door (?or is this dog caged outside?).

The dog is suffering which is why he cries. Heed his cries and uncage him, please. If it is an outdoor environment you need to provide him some sort of shlter and also fence in the yard for his own protection.

The new pup, did not seem to worry about the fireworks at the last new year, it was the last dog that ran away. I am away from home at the moment but I will phone the wife and suggest that she keeps the cage open.

Yes, she is put in a very comfortable cage from 10 pm till about 6am at present and their was no crying last night.

I am away from home until Saturday, the dog is still crying at night, I have uncaged her and she still cries, my wife has left the cage door open at night now, she has loads of freedom to roam about.

This is the first time I have been away from home since we got her about 7 weeks ago, so maybe she is crying at night because I am not there. I wonder if getting another pup would help.

It well might. Dogs love and crave companionship.

She may be crying because even though now uncaged she is still outside and dhe wants to be inside with the humans who are the only "pack" she has.

But if she previously accepted sleeping outside might need to also consider whether she might be sick.

I agree with most of the forummers here. Any animals (not just dogs) don't like to be caged.

If you want to buy a dog, then treat it like your family.

She is not sick Sheryl, she was vaccinated last Sunday for Parvo etc. Any other dogs we have had lived outside no problem, I will have a serious talk with the wife when I get home on Sat about getting another pup. another female.
