Immigration's BMW smart cars out all over Thailand -  Thai house owners fined

Would like to see the cost per “criminal” arrested as a result of using the BMWs.

on another point, always fascinated that the only sirens you hear in Thailand almost exclusively belong to ambulances rushing patients to private profitable hospitals.

The police only seem to use theirs for escort duty rather than responding to incidents, which is quite telling about their priorities. Serving themselves and protecting their income seems to be their motto.

(No BMW was evident in the picture commemorating the bust - it seemed to be a pick-up, perhaps a smart pick-up, notes Thaivisa).

there seems to be a mixer truck in the picture as well, no doubt used for mixing up and spewing out, can't say if it is smart though...

I was in Thailand recently, with my Thai wife, to sign a couple of documents so I have no claim on her little house and piece of farmland. I hadn't visited for 5 years and thought the fingerprinting was OTT. I won't be rushing back.

The PR team said that people could make life easy on themselves by downloading the 24 hour reporting mobile application.

I wish I had met this "dreamteam" so I could have asked them to show me from where to download the app and how to use it to make my life easy...

The sad thing is that they are going after the small fry 'criminals' to make a few hundred baht in fines, and spending a fortune doing it and justifying it to the Thai people ..... for their own legitimacy.

In reality they are the big fish corrupt criminals that are inept at governing. This is the real story that they want to keep from the Thai people.

However, most Thai people know this. They know their government is bad. And the civil service has been turned into an instrument of the military takeover.

I just hope the bile that foreigners feel for the Thai authorities doesn't spill over to the Thai people who are the biggest victims in this whole situation.

Finnish app store does not have it...

It's geoblocked (not much use for it outside Thailand). If you have an Android phone, search on here for the link to download the APK and sideload it.

If you wait until back in Thailand, you need to sign into Playstore with a "Thai" based account (not sure about IOS).

So glad they caught and fined all those terrible criminals... Now all they have to do is fine the Westerners for something, and fix the air pollution problem. Then fine the Westerners a bit more, to buy more thermometers and take the Chinese tourists temperatures, to pretend that's gonna stop the virus from spreading. Good job, boys.

Seriously though, what a horrible place this is becoming to live.

Encouraging people to call up and 'report' foreigners, cars creeping about surveilling foreigners, people that have foreigners living with them being investigated, fingerprints being taken on entry to the country, etc.

Absolutely none of which will affect you in any way if stick to the easy to follow rules or you have nothing to hide!  What's so horrible about that?

I suspect this is a bit of a push to demonstrate the usefulness of these cars after BJ put the spotlight on the hypocrisy of it all. Any hi-tech equipment to find who shot at BJ's car or maybe to convict activist Billies murderer? Priorities!

But why does it have to be a BMW? Why not a basic Toyota with all the technology attached to it. Also, when these cars need maintenance and repairs, it costs a lot more compared to a locally made Toyota, etc.

This is a huge waste of tax payers' money.

They are patrol cars also, why would they want a basic Toyota for that purpose?  They are locally made and maybe BMW gave them a better deal than Toyota.

Lot's of bad thais too.

Drug dealers, murderers and rapists.

Why not focus on checking them?? why waste money going after the minority?

Because they are Immigration police, there are other police departments that investigate the "drug dealers, murderers and rapists"!

Because Thailand plays small. That’s why they rarely succeed at anything they do.

Small minds think small thoughts.

Eh?

If you own rental units here and are overseas, you should be registering the tenants within 24 hours.

Whether you are in Thailand or not, matters not a jot.

They are patrol cars - so

why would they want a basic Toyota for that purpose - because its practical and common sense

maybe BMW gave them a better deal than Toyota - NOPE

I suppose you're also going to assume that BMW will do a better price on servicing.

Yes. But does the Immigration Bureau really need a fleet of BMW's to do this?

They could have bought two or three times the number of Toyota Fortunas, or Honda Civics.

A total waste of money.

I don't see Thai police driving 5 million Baht BMWs checking  Thai citizens- in fact, i don't see many thai police doing much of anything that doesn't involve  money.

They're nowhere near B5m cars!

I am not sure the gov agencies here pay the excessive thai taxes on cars, that's why they are so expensive.

They're locally made cars, not imported so the "excessive" tax rate is the same as an equivalent Toyota.

But i am really suprised they don't use confiscated supercars for this.

Practicality?  Expense of running/maintaining them.  Most of the confiscated supercars are either fraudulently imported or stolen in Europe, the police cannot legally use those vehicles.

Bear in mind the furious backlash there would be from the public if the police used illegal supercars, Thaivisa complainers (not referring to you) would also have a field day!

There are no electric Toyotas?

Maybe BMW do, although I don't know why the government would need to go out of it's way to get a special deal with BMW when they could just do it with a much cheaper and locally made alternative.

No, they're not.
