I see a good point in all of this though, for one it has made me travel again rather than just sit around in La la Land feeding the beast....... There's loads of great countries in this region, why limit your time to just one ?........ Seen it, eaten it, drank it, <deleted> it, nothing more to see here folks........  I must admit though i'm enjoying watching the powers that be squirm hoping that the locals don't give them a well deserved kick up the chuff..........Which they well deserve.........

I had no intention to go to HK. it I wouldn't expect to get a refund because I simply changed my mind.

I will be flying both internally in Thailand and internationally next week. I don't subscribe to the panic and nonsense some posters seem to thrive on.

Of course I have only one life and intended to continue living it to the fullest.

This virus has indeed affected tourism in Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, and China.

  I am in Thailand, and upon hearing a thin skinned Health minister being refused by a tourist,

who did not trust a mask, which was in the bare hand of this man. The Health minister

owes many people an apology for his outburst, not the statement about never apologyzing

to a foreignor. I believe the TAT, could have thanked all of the tourists from Europe, Australia, Russia, North and South America, the Middle East countries who are still coming here or are

still here period, not just pleading for China and India tourists to come back. The attitude of these

and other government officials are disturbing.

You do not quite understand. Chinese culture and superstition is the problem. This would require education from primary school level to excise the attitudes and beliefs about eating wild food. The government spends a lot less on everything including education the farther one gets from the coast of the China Sea. Hubei is a midrange province in this regard. The Cultural Revolution did nothing to change cultural attitudes. It was a smokescreen for concentrating power by a paranoid dictator. Anything recent sound familiar?

 

Controls are pretty hopeless. The Chinese people have spent thousands of years learning how to evade controls.

I've just seen video of authorities in China literally welding people into their own homes, fitting up barricades to prevent entire families from leaving, and dragging kicking and screaming people off to hospital. Easy to see why there aren't many Chinese knocking about right now

I arrived back a little over a week ago, I think the UK government are simply taking things seriously as should be the case with such a situation. 

Well forget the Chinese market at least for six months as the factories are still at least a week to 'what ever' off from starting  meaningful manufacturing targets.This means no body from the ground up is making any money right now..and this after spending the most money during Lunar New Year on presents and holidays!As for other tourists Aussies are booking 'safe destinations'which give value for money..Fiji bookings for Easter are already 80% up on last years bookings..Asia is a 'no go'and Thailand certainly not a preferred destination as in previous years.Europeans will I'm sure have an opinion on what they will be doing this next few months but cruising doesn't exactly look that inviting either based on recent examples!

It looks like the genie is out of the bottle and so the most probable outcome is that this outbreak will go truly global. 

 

If the virus had been contained in China then there would have been a chance to stop it, but if it has reached less organised territories such as Myanmar (which is highly likely to have infections but so far as I am aware has not reported any) then there is zero chance of controlling it.

 

Notwithstanding the official position, the WHO's actual gameplan looks to be to slow the virus down as much as possible in order to give time for the development of a vaccine before (many) millions die.  If this is correct then we can expect more people in quarantine and possibly more countries having flights cancelled.

 

I have heard estimates for the development of a vaccine ranging from 4 months to 18 months.  This probably gives an indication of the uncertainty out there regarding this new virus.  If it does take 18 months to develop a vaccine (and then more months to roll it out) then this could seriously impact tourism for 2 years or so.

 

Thailand's decision to continue to allow tourist arrivals from China may well prove to have been short-sighted. 

There is a phrase, its like Som Nom Na?  The attitude that some have toward westerners is horrible, but it's certainly not the majority and it's sad that so many good people are suffering because of the poor strategy of the board of tourism.  They should have locked out the Chinese from the start, not allowing all the people to come for the lunar new year.  Marketing Thailand as a safe destination within Asia.  This would have protected the industry more than clamoring for Chinese tourist money at any expense.

I'll try to be a little more clear. I said" no one wants to travel to an area decimated by disease #1  China  Ok so far ?  Secondly people don't want to travel to  "areas' near China ( Thailand, Vietnam, ect) which are heavily visited by Chinese and have cases reported in their countries.

Very easy , you don't report the death as from Corona Virus but from regular pneumonia, severe cold ,  common flu or some bacterial infection.
