SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia (Reuters) - None of the 20 passengers on board a cruise ship which docked in the Cambodian port town of Sihanoukville on Thursday have the coronavirus, a spokesman for the Southeast Asian country’s health ministry told Reuters.

The MS Westerdam, carrying 1,455 passengers and 802 crew, docked in Sihanoukville in the evening after anchoring offshore early in the morning to allow Cambodian officials to board the vessel and collect samples from passengers with any signs of ill health or flu-like symptoms.

MS Westerdam set to allow passengers to disembark Friday, 20 ill passengers test negative for Coronavirus

Prime Minister Hun Sen is expected to arrive at Sihanoukville early Friday morning to receive the passengers as they disembark

Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk: All passengers and crew aboard Holland America’s MS Westerdam cruise ship, which docked in Sihanoukville, will be allowed to disembark after medical tests showed that none of them are infected with COVID-19, or commonly known as coronavirus.

The ship docked at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port yesterday morning and none was allowed to disembark after reports that 20 passengers had fallen ill, some with stomach aches and others with flu-like symptoms. Before the ship docked, a medical team went out to sea and visited the vessel to take samples from the affected passengers. The samples were then airlifted to the Pasteur Institute for tests to see if they were infected by the coronavirus.

Health Ministry spokesman Or Vandine said late last night that the institute tests came out negative and further, all passengers and crew, numbering over 2200, will be allowed to disembark this morning. “We have just received information from Pasteur Institute that all 20 samples tested negative for COVID-19,” she said. Preah Sihanouk provincial police chief Major General Chuon Narin said yesterday that when the ship docked at port, a joint government working group boarded it and all the other passengers and crew underwent medical checks and were found to be healthy.

Passengers finally begin leaving cruise ship in Cambodia

Hundreds of cruise ship passengers long stranded at sea by virus fears cheered as they finally disembarked Friday and were welcomed to Cambodia by the nation's authoritarian leader, who handed them flowers.

Prime Minister Hun Sen agreed to let the Westerdam dock at the port of Sihanoukville on Thursday after Thailand, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines had barred the ship earlier.

“How wonderful it is to be here. Thank you very much to the prime minister. He has a wonderful heart,” said Anna Marie Melon, from Queensland, Australia. “I’m very excited (to be here)," she said as she waved the rose Hun Sen handed to her.
