We want more cruise ships! More Europeans! Just one day but it's better than nothing

Tourism operators in Koh Samui have called for the government to get more cruise ships to visit Thailand.

They may only stay - and spend - for a day but given the dire state of tourism at the moment it is better than nothing.

The latest visitor to Nathon Bay on Samui was the Costa Fortuna.

As the name perhaps implies, the tourists on board are quite well-heeled.

Boats ferried 3,000 Germans, Italians and Americans to the town for shopping and tours around the holiday island.

They were met with thermometers and gels as COVID-19 fears abound. And the navy boarded the ship to investigate.

Suda, a tourism operator, told Siam Rath that there may be no Chinese coming anymore but the Europeans were more than welcome - even if it was just for one day.

Company owner Sanchai echoed the sentiments with both calling on the government to ensure that more cruise liners visit Thailand and make up the shortfall being experienced in these difficult, virus affected times.

I'd have thought the health minister would have something to say about that.

Not perhaps without swearing though.

Why would you be taking a cruise at this time. Could spend a lot longer on your cruise, and in your cabin, than you anticipated.

What is lost is very difficult to take back!

Yes,

You might get me to take a trip on the Good Ship Frugal.

But Costa Fortuna?

Forget it.

Just to increase face mask sales?

they must have sold 3000 for that ships day in port, LOL

Oh suddenly europeans are welcome!!! They were treated like unwanted foreigners and now Thailand is begging them to come and spend! But Thailand didn't anything to improve quality tourism. Just selling <deleted> that europeans don't need and want.

I force eurooean friends to visit other countries in  this world that offer wonderful beaches and make you feel welcome !

I'm just guessing that this is a hint of things to come for Thailands Tourist future.

Unless you want to become an attraction show and charge people to come and see you, you need Less cruise ships, more tourists saying there. .

Cruise ship tourists are notoriously low spenders. They eat on the ship for the most part and they sleep there.

They come ashore, they walk around, maybe buy some trinkets and drink a soda. and then they go back.

I think better to ask/demand someone's resignation would be more appropriate.

I, myself, wonder if that extra days is being charged to some credit card unknowingly.  I feel sorry for those kept prisoner in thier cruise ships. I wonder if those in the FEMA camps get such a deal?

After Thailand refused to let the other cruise ship board, any future cruise ships will probably avoid Thailand because they worry that it could happen to them as well. Quite similar to when tourists are denied at the borders, report this, and other tourists decide to spend their holiday elsewhere because they are afraid to be denied entry as well.

Well done Thai government.

No, we do NOT want more cruise ships. In terms of environment and sustainability this is the very worst form of travel/tourism and the most pollutive.

But then Thais don't give a 4x about the(ir) environment, do they? Only about the money.
