They Walk Among Us

Put a new U.P.S system in my coms recently. Or should I say I got a new local internet firm to do the work.

First power cut yesterday. Cursing and shouting coming from direction of computers. The numbskulls had only put my 4 units on U.P.S. and forgot to put the router on.

So we have; No power. Coms all working perfectly. Internet shut down. Me with very red face. Customer with 1/2 hour e-mail message lost. AAAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Or is it like that here?

Question: How many Computers on how many UPS? And the UPS: How much VA or Watts?

First at all: use for the Modem Router anextra UPS and here one with Surgeprotector for the Phoneline that means that the UPS has 2 RJ11 connector, one in and one out! And connect the Modem Router and, if you have, the Ether-Switch for your network, only!

For the computer use for each computer one if the UPS is not more than 600 VA. I use for 1 computer a UPS with 1100 VA which gives me 20 minute of power, if I use 2 Computer on 1 UPS 1100 VA I've 9 minute power!

The UPS I use are NOVA 1100 from MGE with USB connection to the running computer and software running for to automatically saving data if a power cut occurs and the Batteries goes down to 30%, the system will go in hibernating mode and switch off! So, all data saved and nothing loose! I wouldn' take the risk of 2 computer on 1 UPS, the time is to short!

As for the email - I have rescued many an email using the back button in the browser.

Usually goes like this - I am in some internet cafe

- Somebody hits the "send" button on his hotmail account

- gets a page that says "error bla bla"

- gets upset

- I walk over, hit the back button

-> voila, email is back again. now I walk the guy through - click on email body, ctrl-A (select all), ctrl-C (copy), go to Notepad, ctrl-V paste, save it on the desktop.

now wait for the internet to reconnect and hit send again, safe in the knowledge if worse comes to worst, you still have a copy of your email in Notepad (which should be deleted once it's successfully sent off).

there are some configurations of browsers and webmail where that doesn't work - but for most I have tried, it works. seems to always work in Firefox, too. I am not using IE much so don't know about that.
