Labour Ministry spokesman Heng Sour yesterday in a press conference said the number of Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand decreased last year compared to the same period in 2018. Last year, more than 57,000 workers left to work in Thailand, marking a 30 percent decrease from more than 90,000 workers who migrated for Thailand in 2018.

“Everyone will wonder why the number of workers who leave for abroad has declined. As we know, over the past four years, the minimum wage in the country has gradually increased and has come at par with some of our neighbouring countries,” he said. The minimum wage for local workers last year, he said, has improved, especially in the construction sector, thus attracting more Cambodian workers to stay in the country.

Mr Sour also noted the job boom in the agricultural and industrial sectors. “The number of Cambodian workers in some countries such as South Korea and Japan remain high because they have better working conditions than in countries as Thailand and Malaysia,” he said.
