The Thai word for distilled spirit is Lao, someone in the past translated Lao as whiskey without understanding ........

basically true but as others have said Thais generally use "whiskey" as a generic term for spirits. "Lao" is usually a spirit made from rice. Lao Khao being the most widely sold. My favourite is Ya Dong Lao, which is a home brew based on Lao Khao. My BiL makes a great one, rich, red and fruity and guaranteed to blow the top of your head off.

When in Thailand do as the Thais. Forget whiskey and develop a taste for the local spirits.

285 is only 35% but has some whisky in it, red label is probably the worst one in the world, suitable only for mixing

I just tried Blend 285 and it tastes like whisky, similar to Bells or Teachers. Good for 145 baht from Familymart for 345ml
