(Reuters) - Tesla Inc's Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk tweeted on Friday that the coronavirus "panic" was "dumb".

The number of people infected with coronavirus surpassed 100,000 across the world on Friday. The outbreak has killed more than 3,400 people and spread across more than 90 nations, with six countries reporting their first cases.

Stock markets have plunged and concerns have led to shortages of face masks, disinfectant and other items.

Companies across the world are changing the way they work, asking and requiring employees to work from home, for instance, and stopping corporate travel.

Tesla stock is down more than 20% since the news of the virus outbreak triggered a broader sell-off in the stock market around mid February.

Billionaire Musk, with more than 30 million followers, has a history of being outspoken on his Twitter account, one of corporate America's most-watched.

Musk is mostly concerned about his company's stock getting slammed.  Purely self-interest.  In a way, very much like our President.

I think a lot of his fame comes from these controversial comments.

Maybe he could drag the old submarine out to deliver the vaccines to the cruise ships!

Of course it's dumb.

He pays someone else to panic for him. Probably a different guy he sends to panic buy loo roll.

The only person more obnoxious than Musk is Trump, 2 power hungry men who don't give a dam about anyone else, it's all self interest, and not much in the brain department.

Just look at his face...

He must have gone through extensive bullying in his past :cheesy:

He's right.  The media has caused mass panic.  Geez in Australia the shelves have been stripped of dunny roll, rice, pasta, sugar, flour, long life milk, canned foods and the list goes on.  It's mass hysteria fights in supermarkets and police even tazing people to break up brawls.

I still don’t know why toilet paper is sooooo important, can anyone tell me ?. Food yes, batteries yes, a road map on paper yes but a loo roll no.

Unless you were going to Cornwall, then a Looe roll on a map.

Well he’s right... Panicking about anything is dumb.

Someone whose rocket just exploded and whose TSLA stock has plummeted is calling something dumb. Why is a man whose public reactions to world events are so transparently self-serving considered such a genius? Musk is easier to read than a children's book.

and what makes it worse is that these poor souls who have been driven to panic by the media really have no idea what to do.  There has been no real information about what to do except "call or visit your doctor".  I am sure the receptionist loves that idea.  Think about all of the folks who live in townhouse complexes.  How do they react to the proximity of their neighbour?  Fear is an incredible driving force and those that we look to for leadership are singing away in a cult somewhere.  My advice, live what life you have, catch the virus and pray that you live through it though even if you do I have a feeling that the world will no longer be the same place.

As the old saying goes; bad news travels around the world before good news has even got its pants on.

Dont agree much with Musk - but he is right.  The annual flu infects millions and kills about 500K every year.

This is just a bad flu - it aint ebola or rabies - most who die are the old, the smokers and the sick - same as the flu.

A Bridge collapses in Genoa................................ Elon Musk has offered the use of his lawnmower and batman costume ....................:coffee1:

I understand that he is working on a suppository (mini-sub) that can cure those afflicted.

You are expected to stick it where the sun don't shine.

I totally agree, panic is in the mind and is unreasonable, facts show that panic is unwarranted. Although some statistics show a possible fatality of 3% of those people with already compromised health it is reckoned that since hundreds of thousands, if not millions of cases go undetected ( almost no symptoms and recovered etc.) the rate is more like 1% or lower, the 3% statistics are produced from known tested cases. The herd has been spooked, the result of the panic is worse than the illness itself.

Whenever this creature comes to the surface i always get the feeling i would like to see something really nasty happen to him !

Yes, it's dumb. About as dumb as sending a submarine to a cave rescue.

Dear Elon, I'm absolutely not a fan of yours, but on this topic, we are on the same wavelength.
I am of the opinion that panic is artificially increased by world governments ....

You're not a girl, I guess.  ????

Agree no point in panicking, the Genie is out of the bottle, but there are a number of things one can do to reduce the risk until this virus dies out, but for most of us all we are doing is delaying getting it.

The good news is for many they hardly feel unwell which is causing a big problem in containing it, the bad news it is a killer for 1-2% of those who get it.

As for panic buying, I do not have to worry about loo rolls as my mum who passed away last year forsaw this and I still have a years stock of loo rolls and tissues, as for hand gels that is a big problem, we had loads lying around the house that careers had left lying around but I had a big clear up after mum passed away and only had two 20ml bottles left which I have nearly depleted and every shop seems to be sold out of them.

when this finally burns out and they add up the death toll only then will anyone be able to state whether 'panic' was warranted..

Word!
