The Pracha Uthit campus of the Singapore International School of Bangkok is closed from Wednesday through Monday (March 11-15) after it emerged that a private tutor to eight of its students was infected with the Covid-19 virus.

“No staff members or students have tested positive for Covid-19,” said Sharon Ng, principal of the school’s primary section, adding that the school was informed only on Wednesday morning that the tutor was infected.

Classrooms were promptly emptied and scrubbed with sanitiser and parents were called to fetch their children.

The school’s stock price had by 2pm dropped more than 5 per cent, from Bt8.90 to Bt8.45 per share. It reported Bt1.132 billion in revenue in 2019 and net profit of Bt220.87 million.

Sounds more like a business than a school

There are no real schools in Thailand, they are all businesses, same as most hospitals.

They exist to make a profit for the operatives!

Why?Doesn't "shuttered" also mean to be closed for business?

Why only five days?

Your lack of education is disappointing.

“No staff members or students have tested positive for Covid-19,” said Sharon Ng, principal of the school’s primary section, adding that the school was informed only on Wednesday morning that the tutor was infected.

Yet.  As in, were they tested at all at this point?  If the school only was informed on Wednesday morning, that would have left no time to test anyone.

The fact a school has a stock which can raise or lower is sickening in itself. I guess education must seriously be second grade there.

Yes, of course private schools are businesses not charities! They build the best facilities, attract the best talent and offer western curricula. It's a big investment and they expect to make a return - why wouldn't they? And what is wrong with it?

If you don't want to pay for it for your kids you don't have to. They can go to s thai government school. Easy. If they offer a poor education they will fail, but generally they provide the best education.

Not sure why people have an issue with private enterprise making money if they provide a good service.

It's not a state school, it's a private school. It's a business that provides a service.

I was referring to government schools.... thank you for your sermon on "private institutions"

I’ll be shorting the school on Monday ... disease ridden hole.

So how exactly are government schools run as businesses to make a profit?

What's wrong with the grammar in that headline?

Publicly quoted companies usually are businesses.   That doesn't mean that schools can't be, does it?

Obviously, as they are not state-funded, what else would you expect?

Good educational results and profits are not mutually exclusive.  The fact that they are there solely to make profit (in addition to educating) could not be better motivation for high educational standards, could it?
