yet in another thread someone at the hospital says they throw  them away after a  few  minutes

The original medical guideline in the U.S. (I'm not sure about Thailand) was for medical staff to change the N95 mask every time they dealt with a new patient. But there's such a shortage now and the patient counts are climbing, that the U.S. CDC has just revised their masks protocol guidelines to allow medical staff to wear surgical masks if N95 or similar are not available, and if needs dictate, to no longer change the mask between seeing each different patient.

Extended use of N95 respirators

Practices allowing extended use of N95 respirators, when acceptable, can also be considered. The decision to implement policies that permit extended use of N95 respirators should be made by the professionals who manage the institution’s respiratory protection program, in consultation with their occupational health and infection control departments with input from the state/local public health departments. CDC has recommended guidance on implementation of extended use of N95 respirators in healthcare settings. Extended use has been recommended and widely used as an option for conserving respirators during previous respiratory pathogen outbreaks and pandemics.

Extended use refers to the practice of wearing the same N95 respirator for repeated close contact encounters with several different patients, without removing the respirator between patient encounters. Extended use is well suited to situations wherein multiple patients with the same infectious disease diagnosis, whose care requires use of a respirator, are cohorted (e.g., housed on the same hospital unit). It can also be considered to be used for care of patients with tuberculosis, varicella, and measles.

Same thing happened here with SARS. All the sheeple wearing half baked masks oblivious to the facts.

Here we are again with the same belligerent idiocy. Quite sad and dangerous to be so blind to the blatantly obvious.

Avoid idiots, crowds and air condition.

I wonder how many of those Europeans are heading to Thailand because it seems like the safer place at this moment?

This situation is the same as China during its peak, many Chinese went to neighbouring countries/provinces at that time to avoid the virus.

Europe is now the 'new China' so they are escaping the virus there and coming to Thailand. Hopefully, Thailand won't be turned into another China by this new wave of tourists.

Lets not forget the third category of mask, the reusable face masks (both half and full face masks) with changeable filters.

Can you give a link to this third category so that I can look at what it looks like.

This morning I went to a pharmacy in Chiang Mai and there was a long queue of Thai people waiting to buy surgical masks.

Most of the masks at the other shops were all sold out.

The single layer cloth mask seems to be useless as it blocks only big dust.

Check your return ticket as Qatar has placed a ban on Thailand among other countries of entering....do not know how transit works at present. Would not think the UAE would be far behind in denial of entry.

You are Ok if you are in transit thru Doha with Qatar.

Qatar Airways

Entry restrictions
Under the direction of government authorities of the State of Qatar, entry restrictions apply if you are travelling from a number of countries with an end destination of Qatar, but they do not impact transiting passengers.

Please.... they allow FILTERED air in... with a filtering system/material that's capable of blocking very tiny particles that include things like PM2.5 air pollution and airborne virus containing materials...while still allowing filtered air inside for breathing.

view the material on you tube, with Joe rogan on his podcast about 12 minutes long talking to the virus hunter professor Michael osterholm  it is number 1439

N95 respirator masks like those made by 3M -- and worn by doctors and nurses who treat coronavirus patients -- are airtight fitting on the face and are perfectly capable of preventing/filtering out the inhalation of virus particles -- if worn and used properly along with other hygiene measures.

If they weren't, doctors and nurses around the world would be falling sick right now with the coronavirus. But for the most part, they're not, and the N95 masks and other protective gear are the reason for that.

Please stop spreading ignorant nonsense.

Loose fitting drugstore paper masks and homemade cloth masks, on the other hand, are not airtight and are not designed to protect from virus materials in the air, though they may help some...

Doctors and nurses have been infected all over the world despite wearing masks.

These are the best of them all and having bought a couple of them and tested it out they're very comfortable to wear and make a very tight seal with no discomfort or skin problems like I've seen on photos of Doctors who wear the N95 masks all day long - many had open skin wounds on their noses.

The filters last a long time in these reusable masks, you can just keep using them until it becomes harder to breathe, then change the filters for a new set.

There may be on drawback, I have a feeling that people will not like to see you wearing a mask like this in public and if things get real bad you're going to be a target for theft.

I bought two 3M Series 7700 half face respirators along with North 7580 P100 cartridges.  (Note:  P100, not P95).  Each half face respirator uses two cartridges.  (I bought a set of 10 cartridges = 5 pairs.)  All from Amazon Global.  (Note that the respirator does not come with the cartridges; these must be purchased separately.)

                                                 41k4PLVkr1L._SY90_.jpg31WoJk9%2BMTL._SX90_.jpg

The respirator is easy to "don and doff" and equally easy to "fit test."  See great video below:

ukrules, I agree with you that some may not like to see people wearing such a mask.  However, the price gouging online for n95 valved respirators is now up to 400Baht EACH (up from 20Baht!). So, paying 4,000Baht all-in for 2 much better respirators plus the 10 cartridges seemed a reasonable purchase.

Just unbelievable at this time, humans completely disregarding any safety of themselves and others travelling around everywhere - it seems to be out of control.

Then some complaining that govts are not doing enough to inform them or take care of them.

The NHS doctor who tested  me  in UK hospital last week told me that unless you have a N95 Medical quality respirator like she was wearing  or Military quality gas mask with correct filters you are not protected against the COVID virus  , but paper , fabric or other temp masks will only be effective for a max of 1 hour after that they are damp and must be disposed of as they will be a breeding ground for Bacteria and viruses

Masks worn PROPERLY can actually be very helpful in two significant ways:

1) sick people wearing a mask will not spread as much virus as they would do without a mask

2) a healthy person wearing a mask cannot touch their own nose or mouth with their hands as normally as they would often do. Therefore providing some protection in that regard.

Really. That's complete <deleted>.  Masks are useless.

<deleted>.  Masks are useless and many medical experts have said that.

Flew into Phuket a couple of days ago from Zurich.

The flight was full, all Europeans. Nobody wearing masks.

Well that flight bucks the trend. A friend works in the marketing department of a large hotel in Patong and told me only this morning, that the hotel is running at 20% occupancy.
