Eighty-three students who had visited Italy under the AFS Intercultural Programme returned to Thailand, landing at the U-tapao airport on Sunday.

Six were transferred to a hospital while 77 students were sent to the Sattahip Navy base for 14 days of quarantine.

Officials will discuss if more measures are needed to take care of the students.

Italy is the second worst-affected country, after China in the global Covid-19 pandemic.

After reading comments made by people in Italy on YouTube videos, it seems things are very bad there. Young and old people in ICU, bodies piling up beyond the capability to bury and cremate, so they are being stored in churches. This week is the week it gets very real globally speaking.

At least now they're preventing them from going home and mixing with family & friends.

The students repatriated to UTP were AFS merit scholarship recipients from low-income families and would not be capable of sustaining themselves in Italy as other Thai citizens (per BP) still in Italy, barring emergency, have been asked to do.

And per the Pattaya Mail article they were all tested negative for COVID-19 and released under the custody of local health officials.

368 people died yesterday in Italy from Covid-19.

To put that in perspective, China's highest 1-day death toll was 150 people.

Italy were too slow to react, did not take quarantine seriously, aged population, kiss each other as a greeting and did no test enough.

South Korea handled it very well, as did China in the end. Free testing, quarantine and tracking contacts was key for them.

Thailand will fall into the Italy category of poorly managed and when testing is available and affordable. Thailand will explode with Corona.

What movie was that ? bodies piling up.....

No movies. I read comments on virologists video from people from all over the world. Italian people were commenting about it, and so I've just done some research. I won't post a link as I'm not sure on forum rules regarding that, but search around yourself.

'The northern region of Lombardy, which includes Milan, is the area worst-hit by the virus. Several cities in the region have been ravaged by the crisis, including picturesque Bergamo, which is just 40 miles from Milan.

Bergamo has been hit hard by the virus, with the mortuary at the local hospital full and bodies kept in churches while awaiting burial.'

A council official claims that funerals are taking place in the country every half an hour. Giacomo Angeloni, in charge of cemeteries in Bergamo, said: 'We are facing an emergency there is no doubting that. We are having a burial every half an hour.

'We had 18 on Saturday, 44 over Sunday and Monday, 33 on Tuesday and 51 on Wednesday. We've had to close Bergamo cemetery for the time being to cope.

'We are using churches as temporary mortuaries. I have to thank my staff for what they are doing in the face of this tragedy.

Woaw! 368 people died within 24 hours? That sounds very scary. DLock, where do you source this info from?

This topic is about repatriating 83 Thai students from low-income families studying in Italy on AFS scholarships. Per the BP the Thai government has told 7000 other Thai citizens in Italy they will have to remain there for now barring emergency. Obviously both the Thai and Italian governments considered this a necessary humanitarian gesture.

Maybe you can find another topic to discuss the death rate and overflowing crematoriums in Italy.
