TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares in Japan's Fujifilm Holdings Corp <4901.T> surged 15% on Wednesday morning after a Chinese official said the company's Avigan anti-flu drug appeared to help coronavirus patients recover.

Avigan, also known as Favipiravir, is manufactured by a subsidiary of Fujifilm, which has a healthcare arm although it is better known for its cameras. The drug was approved for use in Japan in 2014.

Favipiravir has been effective, with no obvious side-effects, in helping coronavirus patients recover, Zhang Xinmin, an official at China's Science and Technology Ministry, told reporters at a news conference on Tuesday.

A Fujifilm spokeswoman said the company had no comment on the Chinese government's announcement. Fujifilm manufactures Avigan only on receiving orders from the Japanese government and has no sales target for the drug, she said.

Fujifilm shares closed the morning up 14.7% at 5,207 yen, having briefly hit their daily limit high of 5,238 yen.

In a clinical trial in Shenzhen involving 80 participants, patients who took Favipiravir showed greater chest improvement and took less time to test negative for the genomic trace of the virus, compared with patients not given the drug, Zhang said.

First developed by Fujifilm Toyama Chemical Co Ltd, the drug has been approved for manufacturing in China by Zhejiang Hisun Pharmaceutical Co Ltd <600267.SS> for use against new or recurring influenza in adults, the Chinese drugmaker said in a filing last month.

In 2016, the Japanese government supplied Favipiravir as an emergency aid to counter the Ebola virus outbreak in Guinea.

May I ask how you got your hands on that? I thought it's only possible with prescription.

I see elsewhere it is combined with zinc. (India I believe) Zinc is often suggested for lessening the effects of common colds.

i think the zinc needs to be infused in your cell, or something like that.  sure, go buy some zinc, but i have a feeling the science behind zinc is not from taking supplements.

i strongly recommend vitamin D.  just to keep your immune system as strong as possible.

See Youtube, MedCram, Update #34 for the science/studies behind Zinc/Chloroqine.

The side effects of Chloroqine should be read and understood.

Some science behind zinc. Zinc is the main actor but getting into the cell in sufficient concentration is the issue.

Chloroquine, although used for decades, can have serious side effects. Some side effects are due to long term use (years)  while others may be from short time use or due to existing conditions. Anyone considering taking any speculative COVOD-19 medication should certainly consult a good doctor to work out a plan. You also cannot buy these medications outside of hospitals in Thailand. If you are older or have other COVID-19 concerns, a good physician might be a good idea anyway.

Well then I apologize if I misread it, it mentioned how it is going to be manufactured by a company in China, viz:

Hydrochloriquin sulphate, also sold as Plaquinel, 100mg, taken daily has been a medication for malaria for 20+ years, and more recently was discovered to be a very effective medication for Rheumatoid Arthritis.. I have been taking this drug for about 10 years, for RA, but does  have some side effects. It should be taken at night time before bed as can cause sunstroke and skin sensitivity if taken in the morning in hot climates. Diarrhoea and having annual eye tests after long term use are also considerations.

It was recently tested with positive results at University of Brisbane for Covid 19 positive cases. It is available in larger pharmacies close to private hospitals. I was purchasing from Diamond Pharmacy in Wang Lang, next to Siriraj Hospital in Bangkok.

But since COVID isn't a chronic condition, the amount of time you have to take it means there's a lot lot less risk incurred by taking it.

Thanks for the excellent video, makes the chloroquine-zinc connection really clear. I've seen a couple of his videos in the past, he's an excellent presenter.

I posted this on another thread a few days ago! The FDA started talking about this in yesterdays news conference ! I hope this gets going ,cause its been around for a while . IMOP they just need to figure the right dosage.

"A recent controlled clinical study conducted by Didier Raoult M.D/Ph.D, et. al in France has shown that 100% patients that received a combination of HCQ and Azithromycin tested negative and were virologically cured within 6 days of treatment".

100% success in a drug trial - wow that’s incredible. (In the fullest sense of the word).
