Shut Koh Larn: Locals and tourism operators call for island to be sealed off to prevent spread of Covid-19

Thai media reported that locals, tourism operators and officials met at Wat Koh Larn where a vote was held to gauge opinion about shutting the island to visitors.

There was a show of hands and the result was clear - most wanted the island sealed off and checkpoints set up at the port and on Ta Waen beach.

It was felt that the economic backlash would be severe but this was better than having the island infected.

There has not been a case there yet.

The result of the meeting will now be presented to the authorities in Pattaya and Chonburi province to see what can be done.

77kaoded called the vote unanimous in their headline and a majority in their story.

Thaivisa notes that the popular island used to be packed with tourists, particularly from China, before the outbreak began.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot....Koh Lan depends on tourism close to 100%...

If they don't do this to themselves someone will bring an unwanted package to the place... then there will be no choice.

I think it is a great idea.

No, they are not "shooting themselves in the foot"

Next 5 weeks one way traffic only should see the island being the "safest place in Thailand."

Good advertising slogan    Do not tell TAT

Tourism $$$$ are no good to you if you are dead.

The only tourists left are the few that had their flights cancelled and onward travels banned.

After hearing of these stranded tourists scrambling at crowded immigration offices to extend their visas, probably a good idea to keep these guys out.

There's no foot-shooting going on, they all know the consequences...but you'd have to have read and been able to comprehend the OP to know that...
