U.S. has most coronavirus cases in world, next wave aimed at Louisiana

The performances of the various governors in CV impacted areas -- Cuomo in NY, Inslee in WA, Newsom in CA and now Bel Edwards in LA -- have been much praised models for leadership in times of crisis...

Unlike a president who shouts from the White House podium during a supposed coronavirus briefing on how he could have made much more money if he hadn't been elected president and berates the assembled news media claiming they are all out to get him.

C’mon.... those are all democrats... it’s not fair to compare trump to these men. ????

They are indeed all Democrats.... which seems like an odd coincidence under the circumstances... why the virus has struck their areas more than others thus far.

But I wasn't going to mention that, lest someone here try to mistake lack of presidential leadership with partisanship.

No we can't mention THAT - it's an article of faith for many - they literally worship HIM (not Jesus though in case you are confused).

Unlike some others here who are blatantly one-sidedly blind, I would be quick to praise any politician of any party or political view when that person talks to his/her constituents the way Bel Edwards has been talking to Louisianans (?) in a time of crisis....  Calm, reassuring, empathetic, urging the need for collective action and shared responsibility.

At the same time, I'm equally quick to scorn other politicians who are self-obsessed, ignorant, erratic, dysfunctional, divisive, and who fail in their most basic obligation of doing everything within their power to protect the lives and health of their constituents.

I could care less about party. But I care greatly about performance and accomplishment.

They run the places that are ground zero. It some point it could be said that it was going to spread no matter what. If you live in a huge, filthy, city it was always going to be bad. Pretty happy to not live under the NYC and SF admins as they have handled it so wonderfully.

The Mayor of NYC acted way too late closing schools. I can't remember maybe Cuomo over ruled him but it was shocking how late they let it go.

Trump will have them opened up by Easter.

The disease is spreading rapidly in New York because it's the most densely populated part of the USA. It's got nothing to do with the silly prejudices inculcated in the minds of Fox News fans.

The U.S. has lots of large somewhat dirty cities, and not all of them have been impacted the same, at least, not thus far. Seattle with its international airport and the Washington state area got hit early on not because of anything about that, but because they had one of the first cases spread by a returning traveler from China, and then that somehow got into a local nursing home where the virus ran wild and killed many elderly folks there. NY and LA, for their part, also have international airports with lots of China travelers.

Trump was about two weeks late in halting foreign nationals arrivals from parts of China. His order took effect in early February, and the first known virus arrivals from China arrived in the U.S. in mid-January. If he hadn't been so busy denying and minimizing CV, an earlier order might have made some difference. Meanwhile, it's worth noting that nursing home regulation in the U.S. falls under the responsibility of the federal government, and their and the CDC's performance in WA after the outbreak there was an epic fail.

It's infinite, as is the tired, old deflection "show me a reference ..." when people know they are wrong.

What's tired, and frowned on in this forum, is making claims and not providing evidence. Don't make others your research assistants. If you can't or won't back up your claims, you should back off them.

Those states should have ordered shelter in place way sooner. The truth is everybody got caught off guard. All those kids form the cities going on spring break and being super spreaders etc. It's a fail on all sides. Hopefully the people in big cities are prevented from leaving and doing further damage.

That's what happens when you have a ton of Chinese/Chinese Americans flying to China for Chinese New Year, after hearing about the wuflu outbreak yet traveling anyway, contracting the virus, and then flying back to the US.  Trump banned flights to and from China back in January and gets called racist for it

That was nine weeks ago.

Perhaps they were influenced by someone's advice at the highest level:

They are ultimately responsible to make their own decisions. If Trump was stupid and they followed they are also stupid. They waited way too long in hindsight. At the time 99% of the population thought this wouldn't go this far. Most of us outside the cities not cramped up into 10 sql studios are also not really worried.

It seems to only be a huge problem in these big cities that were managed so amazingly.

One of the big enablers of this was the Republican Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, who refused to put a stop to spring breakers partying on the beach.

Some got caught off guard a lot longer than others:

Feb. 26: And again, when you have 15 people, and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, that’s a pretty good job we’ve done.”

And another eminent Republican contribution on the anti-CV front:

Texas' lieutenant governor suggests grandparents are willing to die for US economy

The lieutenant governor of Texas argued in an interview on Fox News Monday night that the United States should go back to work, saying grandparents like him don’t want to sacrifice the country’s economy during the coronavirus crisis.

Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, 69, made the comments on Fox News’ “Tucker Carlson Tonight” after President Donald Trump said he wanted to reopen the country for business in weeks, not months.

...

“No one reached out to me and said, ‘as a senior citizen, are you willing to take a chance on your survival in exchange for keeping the America that all America loves for your children and grandchildren?’” Patrick said.

Hey, who needs old people. They've been around long enough already. Stop complaining and let's get on with things....

The obvious answer here is...sacrificing the elderly shouldn't be what the nation's leaders are contemplating...in order to help Trump advance his re-election campaign.

Spring break was seven weeks long?

This has an incubation time of 3-8 days? 14 max.

Ahh.... but you've never admitted here that Trump was "stupid" or late in his handling of the CV fiasco.... But now you're trying to blame the locals who have been actually doing things, while giving a pass to Trump, who's pretty much done nothing but diddle and dawdle and vacillate ever since the beginning. It's the height of hypocrisy.

BTW, it's not like there weren't plenty of experts, including national security advisors to the White House, warning back in January and thereafter what this was going to become. But obviously, some people choose to ignore looming bad news that they don't want to hear.

Quote

U.S. intelligence reports from January and February warned about a likely pandemic

U.S. intelligence agencies were issuing ominous, classified warnings in January and February about the global danger posed by the coronavirus while President Trump and lawmakers played down the threat and failed to take action that might have slowed the spread of the pathogen, according to U.S. officials familiar with spy agency reporting.

...

Taken together, the reports and warnings painted an early picture of a virus that showed the characteristics of a globe-encircling pandemic that could require governments to take swift actions to contain it. But despite that constant flow of reporting, Trump continued publicly and privately to play down the threat the virus posed to Americans.

If you do a lot more testing, your total numbers will go up.

If you do little to no testing, your total numbers will remain low.

It's as simple as that.

The Trump administration has failed the American public from the beginning of the Covid-19 crisis.  He is betting that the $1200 checks will buy enough votes to get him re-elected.  I am still shocked that any American could believe anything he says.

I actually hate the MAGA <deleted>, and have to ask, how many year has it been

since America was  great.  I really liked the videos that showed what some reporters

as well as Trump said at the beginning of the Covid 19 outbreak, as ompared

what they are all saying now.  I hope this stuff gets replayed a few times on the late

night talk shows.  One thing for sure, us that I am not going to Ameriaf

for a long time, and with the Canadian dollar at 70 ent to the US doolar,

I do not want to go for that reason alone.  Good luck to all in staying healthy.

True.

The USA hasn't done much testing though.

Less testing doesn't mean hospitals ain't full . Everybody in the world knows , US got great specialists , but at a certain price . The price is that healthcare is very low grade . Less hospitals / beds and very expensive . This now bites them in the ass .

Also , the great leader , laughed away this danger which was coming , which made them react way too late . The testing does do something good , since it can if tested enough people close to known infected , can be full quarantined also .

Indeed Geezer-and the very best to you in return.

The U.S. does not have the most cases.  It does if you believe the the b.s. that is coming out of China.  No question who has the most cases even now it is CHINA.
