No worries on electricity supply, minister assures

The Energy Ministry will ensure adequate electricity supply while many people are advised to work from home by the government in an attempt to promote social distance and prevent the spread of Covid-19, Energy Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong said on Saturday (March 28).

 

 

“I have ordered all related agencies, especially the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand, to monitor power usage closely and evaluate the situation on a daily basis as people tend to use more electricity during summer (March-April),” he said. “There should be enough power for everyone despite the government’s recommendation to work from home as we have increased generating capacity by over 30 per cent from power plants nationwide.”

 

Sonthirat added that although power consumption will rise among residential users, electricity usage among entrepreneurs will decrease as many business venues have been ordered to shut down until April 30, such as department stores, restaurants, schools, universities and entertainment venues. “Plus, companies that let their employees work from home will save on power bill too,” he added.

 

As for national oil consumption during the Covid-19 shutdown, Sonthirat said that in the first three weeks of March, oil consumption in Thailand had gone down by 8 per cent compared to February. “The trend should continue to go down as the government has postponed the Songkran holidays, which usually cause oil consumption to spike in April,” he added. “We estimate that oil consumption in 2020 could shrink by 20 per cent.”

 

Meanwhile, Khomkrit Tantrawanich, secretary-general and spokesman of Energy Regulatory Commission, has said that the Ministry of Energy will still prepare for increased power usage in the coming months by postponing maintenance schedule of power plants to make sure that all can run at full capacity when necessary.

 

“Furthermore, we have ordered PTT Plc to reach out to LNG providers in Myanmar to postpone the scheduled maintenance of their facilities to ensure uninterrupted distribution of LNG, which is one of the main fuels for power generation,” he added.

Yep - those guys in Benghazi should have realised when Obama/Clinton said everything was OK, that the proverbial was about to hit the fan.   Note to wife: call family and make sure they have some idea what to do if the power goes out - because as in all things in Thailand the Govt says are fine - they are about to crash. 

Power cuts on the way by the sound of it????

So,  the regular power outages will continue as normal.  I understand they cannot give advanced warning if it's an accident but how about when it's regular maintenance???

I wasn't that worried before ,after reading this I am now worried!

We've already had 3 power cuts this week and once power was so low it wouldn't even light a 24 watt bulb for a few hours.

Easy for me to guess when its maintenance or upgrade goes off at 8.30 normally i know its going to be off for a long time.  If you have a car buy an inverter and a long extension lead (yeh i know condo dwellers may have a problem) even a small one will run a fan and chargers.

The last two were on 25th March - we managed two in one day.

Those who criticise the 'Thai bashers', seem to forget that's it the government who are providing all the feed lines. Sometimes makes it difficult not to have a pop.

Well i[touch wood] have been fairly lucky were i live regards power,water none from govt for near on two months.

Yea sounds a lot like the "there will be no flood" remark in 2011 just before the country was totally flooded. Whenever the goverment makes remarks like this. Like no mask shortage ect you should worry.

For once let me believe this minister.

Closing the energy wasting super malls in Bangkok alone frees enough capacity for complete upcountry provinces.

And really, all the shutdowns combined should be sufficient for those staying at home.

Funny but yesterday I got 2 times electricity shutdown totally for more than 3 hours.

Time to get the Hurricane Lamp and Candles out then !

22 posts so far, your doing well winging about my supposed "winging, some more intelligent posters read it as being an observation about a very bad storm.
