Ending Chiang Mai's self-quarantine and shut-down now that the curve is flattening

is like stopping your course of antibiotics after 3 days because you're feeling better.

Medically, it makes no sense at all, and only leads to relapse.

People have self quarantined in Changnobyl  for years, can't leave the house because of air pollution. What's changed?

At the same time we can't live in lockdown forever. You can get cases from other provinces and the whole thing can start again. I think some businesses can reopen. But I don't think life can go back to the way it was before. I see a future with mandatory mask wear, enforced social distancing on busses etc and without muay thai stadiums and big parties until we get a vaccine or a cure. Also see temp checks in supermarkets and banks just like now, for years to come. Perhaps mandatory masks for serving staff and cooks etc.

That's odd...   I've lived here for 19 years. Never had to self-quarantine before. Hopefully, won't have to again if we stay in for another few weeks.

Nobody is stopping you to continue wearing masks and to stay in your room. Nobody will come to drag you out. You're safe.

Stay in it for another few weeks??! It is patently clear that there will be no vaccine this side of year-end and at least 2 more years of assiduous vaccination programmes to begin to create enough resistance in the working population. 

Unless people worldwide change their behaviour, wear protective devices, cease to gather en masse, act like adults and respect each other there will be no return to what is regarded as normality. This requires inspiring leadership which simply does not exist in this country or indeed in few others apart from Taiwan, Singapore, New Zealand and Iceland. It certainly does not exist on any level here.

So get used to having several further crackdowns, have your masks ready and keep a good stock of booze. The new normal is not normal.

I disagree.  The world isn't going to come to an end.

The world was in much worse shape, financially and emotionally in 1918, yet managed to bounce back after the enormous Pandemic that struck then. It will again.

I'm not worried about catching the virus. I'm far more concerned about spreading it to others.

It's just a shame that there are those who don't really care about that aspect of the problem.

In the Philippians now, people (not the government... local people) are shooting people who are caught going out without masks, because they are endangering the entire community.  THAT is how serious they take the problem. Personally, I think that's rather extreme, but I do agree that those who are endangering others need to be removed from society, placed where they can only endanger themselves.

You have the right to not wear a mask if you don't want to. But you do not have the right to endanger others by doing so. Take it somewhere else.

Apart from  the social lockdown  and alcolhol ban  one can leave and go to their local  market / major grocery  chain  and purchased their food  etc  requirements or seek medical attention where Doctor or Hospital  are needed

The ban on social  lock down ( resturants  etc ) and Alcolhol bans  are the main source of financial  misery which leads to the Tourist and Hospitally industrys which are the lifeline of Thailands Economy

No work leads to no money or

poverty and with numbers of Covid 19 at very low levels the present bans etc 

should be llfted immediately

with social distancing in place

I would agree with you... except for one thing.

People like you would not respect the social distancing.

You have already told us that you were willing to break the law just to go out and buy alcohol.

You didn't respect the 'laws' of society by doing that.

Why would anyone believe you would respect the societal 'suggestions.'

As long as some people are acting irresponsibly towards the community, it puts the entire community at risk. Better to have actual laws, as at least more people adhere to them.

OP, why are you living here?  I think you may be happier in North Korea, where you can enjoy obeying all the laws, regulations, and social bans of gatherings, protests, or free speech.

 

I suspect you would just love to get a job as one of the police there and catch all the people in society who are doing 'harm' to the masses.  You could even shoot them if you like, as you state that shooting people for not wearing masks is only 'a little' extreme.

No, no need to be a snitch. But I did live in a commune for several years back in the late 60's.

I enjoy being part of a healthy community, where everyone works together, doing their part to insure the viability of the community.  During those years, there were a couple of people who joined the commune but didn't want to live within the commune's guidelines. They were made to leave.

Good riddance to them. They only wanted to help themselves, not the community.

There is no need to be a 'snitch.' The Thais around you see your behavior. They don't forget. Sure, the shop where you may secretly buy alcohol during the ban is happy to take your money. But they will ALWAYS remember that you are not to be trusted... You will always be just a farang drunk who has money to be taken.  They will smile at you, just like always, but you'll know that's not a 'friendly' smile. It's a knowing one, knowing you are not to be trusted for anything other than money.

I'm a guest of Thailand. Thailand has been kind enough to allow me to live within its society.

It behooves me to follow Thailand's laws, not try to circumvent them. 

There is a name for people who break the law; criminal. You may be proud of that title. It's clear that some are as they proudly boast of breaking the law.  The title is 'criminal.'   It's not a title most responsible people would care to wear.

 

There are some laws I don't agree with. But they are Thailand's laws, and as a guest it's my responsibility to follow them. If I were a guest in your house, I'd follow your house rules. That's just common courtesy.  It seems quite obvious that you don't wish to follow Thailand's house rules.

Perhaps it's you that needs to leave.

There are way too many other more interesting things to do. Recreational, educational, community service, international activities, etc., etc. The list is long.

Yes... it is.  Just as using Iodine to clean a wound... it was too caustic to the healthy skin around the wound. 

Now that there are better and less caustic antimicrobial we've stopped using it.

But when Iodine was the ONLY 'effective' method of treatment, we had to use it or face serious infection.

 

We are in the same situation right now.  Self-isolation IS causing problems. Shut-down IS causing problems.

But until there is a more 'effective' way of dealing with this Pandemic, it's the only viable, life-saving solution.

I'd prefer we didn't have to utilize such draconian methods. But we are not there yet.
