China rejects Australia's questions on its handling of coronavirus

BEIJING (Reuters) - China dismissed as groundless on Monday Australia’s questioning of how Beijing handled the coronavirus pandemic, saying it had been open and transparent, despite growing scepticism about the accuracy of its official death toll.

 

Australia’s foreign minister, Marise Payne, called for an international investigation into the origins and spread of the virus, joining a chorus of concern over how China tackled the virus that emerged in its central city of Wuhan last year.

 

Since then the virus has caused nearly 2.4 million infections and more than 160,000 deaths worldwide, paralysing life and business in major cities.

 

In Beijing, a foreign ministry spokesman said Payne’s remarks were “entirely without factual basis,” adding that questioning China’s transparency was unfounded and showed a lack of respect for the sacrifices of its people.

 

“China expresses deep concern and resolute opposition to this,” Geng Shuang told reporters during a daily briefing.

 

Australia’s call comes amid rising criticism in recent weeks from the United States, including President Donald Trump, who said on Saturday that China should face consequences if it was “knowingly responsible” for the pandemic.

 

On Monday, China’s National Health Commission reported 12 new infections, taking the mainland’s tally to 82,747, while the death toll stood unchanged at 4,632.

Unless majority of the other countries sue China, otherwise China is safe.

It will be interesting to see though how many countries really hold China to account when this is all said and done with real action.

WHO raised the 'possibility' of sustained transmission one day before China implemented the most draconian lock down recorded in recent history, welding people in their dwellings, blocking even emergency roads with massive immovable barriers with little regard to peoples survival.

 

There are two possibilities. The CCP is cruel beyond comprehension, or, they knew exactly what they were up against.

 

Answer: B, they knew, possibly because they knew its origin from the beginning.

Would just be awesome if all other countries would work together, instead of just dumping accusations one-by-one.

Imagine if EU, US, Australia made a combined investigation/complaint, then it would not be so easy for China to sweep it aside.

I'm afraid that the answer is both A & B.....

 

 

It's fairly obvious that China knew what this virus could and did do. Their actions concede to this line of thinking. The question is and will remain as to whether they deliberately allowed 500000 people leave wuhan to spread the virus worldwide and whether or not the virus actually was something they had in their lab that somehow escaped into population. The claims about how the people suffered and we should respect that is ludicrous being that the whole world is suffering more still from the CCP inaction.

Marise Payne is <deleted> licking Australia’s strategic master at the expense of aggravating Australia’s economic master. Foolish woman! This could be done diplomatically and intelligently , if she has factual evidence or even hunches that it could be true.

Is it not fog horn diplomacy to satisfy some domestic political interests? We all know Oz is heavily dependant on trade with China. So far as I know, no other markets to absorb loss of profitable commodities export trade with China, whereas China can utilise other large minerals exporter countries.  IMO any meaningful response will not occur.

China, had no warning ahead, and had to find out that a sick person dying was the first covid dead, well I guess if you talk about an epidemic, you will have to wait for some 5-10 suspected cases, which with a incubation period of 5-14 days could take a months or so.

From mid Jan the dangers of covid were known and warnings spread by WHO and many experienced virologists.  It was the western leaders, Johnson, Trump that were joking around that time, calling it a hoax, calling it fake news, blaming the democrats a little later, losing time. Then, those Id..ts turned to "simple flue" , and "community immunitie" ideas, those were not the warnings from exp. virologists but those from politicians with their own agenda.

 

Look now, those politicians have lost it all, while they all had a long warning time before cases came to western countries, time wasted to prepare and fight the pandemic:resulting in millions affected and ten-thousands of deaths, hospitals overwhelmed , and country's in lock down.  All because of their jokes, time wasting and their "not listening to specialists" and "caring more for the economy than caring for their own people and country"

I suspect it will be very few.

Many countries around the world owe China money.

Global boycott of Chinese goods by consumers. It'll be difficult but I won't buy anything new that's been made in China. I'm buying used, paying more for quality goods made in other countries, or going without from now on.

last thing china wants is the truth about what they did to come out, they have made those in china that have told the truth disappear and are using threats and lies/innuendo etc to try to stop countries from around the world get to or expose the truth. The world needs to condemn china/xi for causing this, good to see at least a few countries now standing up to them but will it go any further and lay the blame firmly at chinas feet so they are punished, that is the big question

Very rarely watch 60 minutes these days, as its years of competent/unbiased journalism have long since vanished.  But in the boredom of lockdown, there was an article on Sunday, where a US lawyer was interviewed.

 

He has a class action in motion against the Chinese Communist Party with over 10000 signaturies already, to the tune of $3 trillion.  The action will be listed in a US court.

 

He believed there was some prospect of success (who knows  - it's new territory).  He also believed that if it were successful that although China would probably just ignore the judgement, that they could then seize and sell Chinese owned assets within the US.

 

Probably likely that if its established that China has acted unreasonably and deliberately hidden information, that similar cases will unfold in many countries.  China may well find itself losing assets all over the world.

If the States confiscate all Chinese property in the USA, what You think China will do with the USA properties in China. Indeed , yes. 

And than , which countries has the majority of dollars in hand? Indeed, yes.

Which country is manufacturer for the world? Indeed, yes

 

The USA will bankrupt itself if it were to confiscate Chinese property in the States and give the overall win away in the hands of China.

You're kidding, right? The CCP covered up the outbreak and actually silenced medical professionals who spoke out. Then exported thousands of Chinese as carriers, either deliberately or through sheer ignorance.

Certainly you can say Western politicians have been incompetent fools. However, giving the CCP a free pass is plain rubbish.

The easiest way to punish China would be to recognise Taiwan as an independent nation, and make it stick. The loss of face for the CCP leaders would be huge.

It is a matter of recorded fact that in early November 2019 a Doctor Li WenLiang in Wuhan reported to fellow medics that there was a SARS type virus that was capable of transmission to humans and needs to be controlled.  Early December 2019 he was arrested and told to 'stop making false comments'   The Chinese authorities had him arrested and thrown in to jail thus suppressing the early release of vital information.

Not denying that in the beginning, when doctors were worried that the "unknown" respiratory illness was a SARS extension, the committee members were suppressing the communication. But after the warnings came out of China in early January, the Western leaders were only joking and spreading fake news around, loosing time rather than prepare for a pandemic. An expedient action would have saved thousands Europeans and americans deads.
