"Wonderful kind foreigners" stepping up to help! Thai media praises efforts to help desperate Thais

The Thai media is full of stories about kind foreigners helping out Thai people in their hour of need.

 

Help has been pouring in from foreigners who, despite being badly affected by the Covid-19 crisis themselves, want to give back to the people and country they love.

 

Following stories about foreigners doling out food supplies in places like Chiang Mai came news that a group of foreign businessmen and their Thai wives had prepared 850 emergency packs for the hungry on holiday island Koh Samui.

 

Steven, a Scottish beer bar owner, told PPTV that he had been forced to shutter his business after the governor of Surat Thani issued an order. He was affected but not as bad as many Thai people who have lost their jobs and incomes in the economy that is heavily reliant on the now largely shut down tourism sector.

 

So he got together with some foreign friends who run dive shops and enlisted the help of their Thai wives.

The message from Steven was that Thais and foreigners would get through this together.

The local authority were informed and all protocols were followed including mask wearing, health checks and social distancing.

 

Manager said that items like rice, tinned sardines and bamee noodles were handed out to the needy in Ban Bang Rak, Bo Phut.

Both they and PPTV praised the foreigners for their wonderful kindness in the crisis.

 

Samui has had few cases of coronavirus though the economic impact has been devastating. PPTV said there had been no fresh cases for 10 days and there had been just seven in total.

 

Four of these were being treated in hospital and three had been allowed home.

To give food and help is one thing that many already done, but that they also was keeping up with the checks and social distancing is admirable.

Many foreigners consider Thailand their home and the people around them, their community. 

Truth be told, many care more about the land than the locals.

It's a shame that the powers that be don't seem to recognise this, making it easier for the good guys to make this their permanent home.

I'm told that yesterday some kind hearted foreigners in Pattaya were handing out food packages to local residents until the the police came and shooo them away saying that No, you can't do that.. go figure...

Just jobsworths wanting to show their authority....people not queuing properly and no pre notification sent...as I said "jobsworths"

It's a nice gesture but where is the government aparatus that should have been put in place for this reason? Any idiot should know this would cause serious problems for the poorer part of the country.

Remeber that, the next time you tell me "You no undasatand Thailand" or "You just guest- go home if you no like!"

And maybe...just maybe...kick your government in the butt , so next time they actually pay money to every needy person!

They are still having meetings and discussions on what to do.

 

When I was working we adopted the acronym JFDI. Just <Deleted> Do It and sort the paperwork out later.

I sent 1500 baht to one of those located on Samui since it's the island I visit most when I'm in Thailand. It's not alot of money but if enough people chip in it can make a difference.

We need a list of which Nationalities are assisting the locals. Wonder how many Chinese are giving back after grinding the world to a halt? 🤔 

 

Easier visas in the future for those that helped out maybe? 🤔

My Thai Wife and a bunch of her pals had a whip round and then bought loads of supplies and then handed it out to the very poor on the Island (my only part was to make a sizeable donation).  A few hours after the food had been distributed my Wife received a message from a Lady with two little children saying that because she didn't have any transport, by the time she got to the distribution point, all the food had been handed out.  We felt so awful that a deeper investigation of Sammy's pockets found a few more hundred baht, which to be honest I didn't really need!  So off she went to meet a very grateful Mother.  Just makes you feel good to be able to put something back in to the community.

The Chinese run a charity in my town (Warin Chamrap) and also provide free funerals for those who die in poverty and have no Thai family in the vicinity.

 

The funeral service and meal are free for all.

Thais see themselves as unique and superior and are educated (indoctrinated) to think so.

 

Reality as we know is very different and they are nothing special neither as a nation and very rarely as individuals.

 

If things get bad here expect foreigners to be scapegoated, and all blame shifted.

Yes - but you can look back at a job well done - I managed to raise 170,000 baht to help one young man- and saved his life - never met him before- have only seen him on a ventilator- never met him since- but a good feeling .
