April 27, 20205 yr Popular Post It allows me to rediscover all the great music and movies/ tv series that i could never had without the internet. I loved 50s, 60s, 70s music but it's impossible to buy the records now and of course we couldn't save the movies back then. But with the magic of digital I get to listen to all the great music and see those movies. So chalk one up for the digital world.
April 27, 20205 yr Popular Post I find listening to them on Youtube takes me back in time, so many memories, places, times, and people.
April 27, 20205 yr Popular Post The internet sure makes the shelter-in-place order much more bearable.

Torrents are terrific, but ask around to see if any of your friends are running their own Plex server and request access to that. As easy as watching Netflix but without the cost and with more interesting content. In short, Plex provides a nice frontend, accessible online, to the collection of stuff that they have already torrented. You can access as many Plex servers as you are invited to share. Different friends will have different collections, some will have some of the same tastes as you.

April 28, 20205 yr When I'm in need of nostalgia, You Tube is my channel of choice. They have a feast of stuff - music and movies and the reproduction quality is generally pretty good. I watched Bridge of the River Kwai (colour), and Twelve O'Clock High in B & W the other night. 1949 movie starring Gregory Peck. Hadn't seen it before. Both excellent copies.
April 28, 20205 yr Popular Post Right on, guys. They can stop us strolling in the parks and along the beaches. But they can't prevent us from wandering down memory lane!
April 28, 20205 yr @thaibeachlovers Late to the party but WELCOME! For movies and TV series you've been given the links above, although i generally prefer torrents as I can stash stuff away to watch whenever. For online music may I suggest: Spotify https://www.spotify.com/ I'm especially into music from 1920s to 1960s and I torrent or YouTube loads of it If you're into radio https://tunein.com/ my favourite - you can sort by location, genre, language - I was listening to "Goon Show Radio" this morning (yes I know!) https://www.jango.com/ https://live365.com/ https://www.accuradio.com/ Also you CAN listen to BBC outside UK (theoretically you cannot watch BBC TV) so have a go at https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/stations There are loads of specialist music shows on Radio 2 (I like Clare Teal (Big Band) Cerys Matthews (Blues) Bob Harris (Country) and if you can catch Huey Morgan, his shows are totally esoteric) Check out Radio 4 Extra for comedy, Radio 6 for newer music Plus, Plus, Plus Remember "Google is your friend" (other search engines are available) Enjoy! ????????

That was why I said "theoretically" - when I was in Patts I just used a Chrome "VPN" extension to watch BBC. Did have to fiddle with the settings a bit - my suggestions to the OP will all work on a "bog standard" PC or device without any extras - or did a month ago when I was last in Thailand.

I use torrents all the time but this just seems to be a way of using a torrent without feeling guilty about it? I don't rob banks but don't hesitate helping spend the money when my friends do.

Obviously I do use digital- I'm using it right now, but I do regret that every minute I spend on the internet is a minute I could have spent doing something better, but I'm the first to admit it is addictive. There is no particular connection to torrenting, that is just one of the possible ways in which the person managing the Plex server might have acquired the content. Torrenting is not illegal. Torrent tech has hundreds of uses, one of which is sharing video content. That video content may or may not be pirated. The particular distribution technology used is not, in itself, anything to feel guilty about. Using YouTube to watch content uploaded by someone other than the copyright holder is equally illegal, as is using a VPN to circumvent geo-restrictions, or buying pirated movie DVDs in a market, or fast-forwarding past advertisements. It is up to you to decide what your personal position is on watching such content. Personally, I feel that the entertainment industry have been too slow in adapting their distribution and pricing to make sense for most potential customers. They should never have made buying their product so much more difficult and encumbered than it is to simply download it for free. It is far more a matter of convenience than cost. When the music industry finally came to their senses and services such as Spotify and Apple Music emerged, I subscribed. The convenience of those services, along with the reasonable price of ten dollars a month, made sense even for someone who listens to music only occasionally. The music companies get a share of my subscription based on what music I listen to. Likewise, if someone came up with a legal service that provided all the TV shows and movies I can currently download for free, I would probably be willing to pay 40 or 50 dollars per month, but only if it was more convenient than downloading them for free. I would also pay a reasonable subscription for a service providing unlimited ebooks and audiobooks. Netflix is pretty good, but the selection is way too limited. Paying for all the various TV services (HBO Now, Apple TV, Hulu, Netflix etc) is too expensive. I actually don't watch that much and don't want to waste time or effort managing so many fragmented services. If someone tells me some show or movie is good, I want to be able to start watching it right away, in the same way that I can listen to any song on Spotify. Watching pirated TV shows and movies is not the same as robbing banks because, as it stands, I would not be their customer anyway. Any loss to them is notional. When they eventually catch up with the music industry and provide subscription services that make sense, I and hundreds of millions of others will start paying. I suspect Covid-19, and its affect on the cinema industry, will hasten that day.
April 29, 20205 yr Popular Post As so many TV users are asking me to compose more poetry, I thought I'd drop this off ... Technology It started with grunts and maybe some groans, animal like, with hisses and moans Then we had language, words we could say, all of their meanings, we use everyday Distance was a problem we had to overcome there were many choices smoke or a drum Then the wire arrived with all of that morse either that or the back of a horse Then came the radio we're a long way from caves for now we've discovered those long and short waves FM to follow a different band all of those stations at the touch of a hand Then came the telephone it might sound absurd copper wire to carry the word Now its amazing the technology hype the other side of the world can be reached with skype Video conference, smart phones and apps when will it end? Never perhaps Quantum physics will open the door to the creation of matter or day I say more The ability to travel at the speed of light that would make us incredibly bright Telepathy beckons, or its already about. We aren't always told what's in and what's out Nothing matters!! What a strange sound! It's even stranger, if you turn it around! For soon we shall see the smallest of things, smash them together, to see what it brings

I suspect Covid-19, and its affect on the cinema industry, will hasten that day. I have nothing against torrents. Just pointing out that if the content is from a torrent using Plex and letting your buddy steal the content doesn't exactly absolve ones self. I use torrents and have no problem doing the dirty work myself. Torrents aren't illegal it is the top 100 on piratebay that is. Let's not kid ourselves 90% of torrents online are pirated content. But yes I can understand at times the need to say torrents aren't illegal so people are able to talk about them with out being called out for breaking rules. I also understand the point that torrents are sometimes actually easier to use than DRM content which limits the people who od it the legal way. You have to be sort of a sucker to buy something and then be dictated which device you use it on. However at the end of the day you don't need to justify what you would pay for what per month as you don't. Just say you know it is not legal in most places but simply don't care. Just own it. I don't always obey laws I don't agree with. I don't make lengthy excuses for this.
