New COVID-19 cases in Thailand fall to single digits

BREAKING.jpg

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand on Monday reported nine new coronavirus cases and one death, bringing the country's totals to 2,931 cases and 52 fatalities.

It is the first time since the outbreak started in January that there have been no new local transmissions reported in Bangkok, said Taweesin Wisanuyothin, a spokesman for the government's Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration.

Of the new cases, three were linked to previous cases, two are arrivals from overseas that have been under state quarantined, and four others were reported from the southern province of Yala, where the authorities are aggressively testing the population due to high infection rates.

The latest death was of a 64-year-old Thai woman.

Since the outbreak escalated in January 2,609 patients have recovered and gone home.

Bang on target to the day!

Steadily heading in the right direction, and will make it tough for the government to justify continued tough restrictions, given the impact it is having on the local population. The more things can get to normal come May 1st, albeit with a few precautions and provisos the better.

Covid-19 cases drop to single digit – 9

By The Nation

The number of Covid-19 patients in Thailand rose to 2,931, with nine new cases confirmed over a 24-hour period and one new death, Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman of the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration, said today (April 27).

He said today is the first day the number of new cases has dropped below 10 – the lowest since its peak of 188 on March 22.

With one new death, the number of fatalities is now 52, while 2,609 patients have recovered and returned home. The other 270 are undergoing treatment in hospital.

No new case was reported in Bangkok in the past 24 hours.

The cases can be divided into three groups:

One group of three had come into close contact with previous patients.

The other group comprised four people, who were discovered during an investigation operation in Yala.

The last group consisted of two who returned from the United States and were under state quarantine.

A 65-year-old woman who had anaemia died of acute kidney and respiratory failure on April 26. She had been in close contact with her family of five, all of whom were infected. She experienced breathing problems on April 2 and was confirmed on April 8 to have contracted Covid-19.

Meanwhile, 15 people have fully recovered and returned home.

Of the 9 new cases, five were in Yala, two in Bangkok’s state quarantine, one each in Phuket and Suphan Buri

Today, a number of Thais will return from abroad – 35 from Japan, 25 from the Netherlands and 168 students from New Zealand. Tomorrow, 12 Thais from Spain and 200 from India will come back home.

Would they have to be Covid Zombies for the numbers to be negative ????

We must wish the authorities well in their battle with the virus in the Deep South, and that they really mean it when they claim to be "aggressively testing" people down there.

I'm stuck with a mental vision like something out of Jurassic Park, where there are monsters trying to get through the gates, lol.

Well let's just hope if they're going to report several hundred new cases resulting from the Thai people returning from overseas that they don't do it until after May 1st.

Problem is govt knows the numbers are bs because they are not testing. This is all for show. Thailand 1st in the world, wait maybe that's China, to have no new cases. Very difficult to believe in a non-testing regime and everyone globally knows China is full of it. State of emergency will be extended citing second wave even though they don't know the full extent of the first wave which one has to think is continuing. Just let people buy alcohol again it will not make a difference.

Presumably the returnees get tested for Covid before they are allowed to book a seat back (maybe silly me?? bluuddy ridiculous if they are not pre-tested). If so the infections are unlikely to be hugely significant in number and in any event they will not even start to show thru until after May 1st.

Perfectly timed flights by the Government to meet the single digit threshold. You guys may be critical but for me this mob are handling the expectation management ten times better than the UK and US!

Going in the right direction. It was a fairly safe bet that the number would be 9 today......

Maybe they now have two orderlies pinning the PUI down while the third angrily rams the swab in the nose.

We all know it doesn't mean the number of tests.

Them extending it shows that the numbers they are publishing are not real.

We should be weary

Yes, this makes sense. There are 3 days left. (9) - 6 - 3 - 0.

Don't worry Dinsdale. Your dog (or is it hedgehog????) will have its day if you are right with your implied expectation of a disastrous number of deaths yet to come.

Of course if it is later discovered that masses of people were infected all along but the death rate stays put at 0.003% of the population nobody will care a fig about your protestations. My money is on this outcome. I'll buy you a beer if I'm wrong.

Betcha it's marginally above 10 tomorrow!

Lockdown extended, apparently. Sorry, waiting for English version.

We all know nothing. We are all guessing and using our prejudices to do so! Fun innit?
