I'm an American citizen who will be travelling to Thailand in June and I would like to apply for a 60 day tourist visa.

I leave the US on the 2nd of May and I don't think I have enough time to apply for the visa before I depart on my trip. I am considering applying for the 60 day visa while I am in Singapore (during the month of May). Does anyone have experience doing this/ suggestions?

Your help is much appreciated!

Cheers

If you talk to a consulate they should be able to help you before you leave the States. Normal turnaround time at the Chicago consulate has always been 3-5 days for me and I believe you can pay extra for rush service. With current uncertainties I think it wise to take care of it before you leave.

You should not have any problems applying for a tourist visa in Singapore.

If you apply for your visa in the US it will be valid from date of issue and may be too early for you to use it in June (3 months for single entry)

Turnaround in Singapore is 24 hours

Thank you! Unfortunately I live in San Francisco and I'm a little wary of mailing my passport off and getting it back in time.

What uncertainties are you referring to? I purchased a return ticket on airasia, so that shouldn't be a problem. Is there something else I should look out for at the singapore consulate?

Thanks for your time!

Silly question for you...

I thought that the visa needed to be activated within 90 days of obtaining it and that once you crossed over into thailand your 60 days started (regardless of how many days it had been since the visa was issued).

Have you applied for a visa in Singapore?

I looked at the LA consulate and their mail-in turn around time is 2 weeks so you are right, it is too late to do that.

The visa situation is very fluid right now. Many emasies/consulates in asia are refusing to issue tourist visas to applicants from a third country. I believe Singapore is one that is still issueing now but as things are going there is no telling what will be happening next month.

I don't mean to alarm you. It is likely you will be able to get your visa there but there are no guarantees what the rules will be next week let alone next month. My original point was to get the visa in the US just as a hedge against future changes. Getting the visa at home is the most reliable option, that is all I meant.

Yes I have applied for a visa in Singapore.

If you apply in the US now your visa will be valid from now (April XX until July XX)

You should as you say enter Thailand within that period and you will get 60 days stay from date of entry.

Once in Thailand you can extend it by 30 days at an immigration office.

If your visa is not more than one entry and you want to keep your period of stay alive, you need to purchase a re-entry permit at immigration offcie in Thailand.
