James Bond: Tom Hardy is now priced at 5/1 to be the new 007 (Image: GETTY)

James Bond is set to enter a new chapter later this year after Daniel Craig bows out of the role.

He will make his last appearance in No Time To Die before leaving the position of 007 open for a new actor to take his place.

But Bond bosses have yet to confirm who will be stepping into his shoes.

However, Tom Hardy is making a play for the position at bookies, his odds being shorted from 6/1 to just 5/1 in the past couple of days.

IMHO - After the last couple of "serious" Bond movies we need a more "tongue-in-cheek" Bond.

No. No we don't. Let's never ever go back there and never mention it again ????

Although Barbara Bach in The Spy Who Loved Me was probably one of my first crushes. ????

I still miss Roger Moore, he starred in (IMO) the best Bond films, I will

qualify this by saying that his reign ran all the way from my teens which,

I reckon is probably the age when most men are most impressed with macho men

killing bad guys and bedding beautiful women!

I don't remember seeing any of the Dalton or Brosnan movies and think Craig takes

the whole thing way too seriously, I much preferred the hammy Connery

and Moore movies.

Connery wasn't hammy, he was slapping women around but yes Moore was a little OTT.

Dalton for me was the best bond but he was given some of the weakest scripts.

Will miss Craig.  Loved him as Bond.

Me too.  I thought he brought some grit to the role.  Loved Sean but he just played Bond in a different style.

Be a good choice. Looks right for the part, and great proven acting chops with lots of gritty action roles behind him.

A bit flabby faced - 007 doesn't have drooping jowls!

Agree. Moore trivialised the role.

Connery was the only real Bond. Had the correct mix of machismo, real manliness and raw sexuality for the ladies. Some of his films were badly made, and without him would have failed big time.

Brosnan was too wimpy and PC and do not mention the actors starting with D or L.

Craig was good in the part, though PC had run rampant by then.

I've seen Hardy in movies and he should be OK. Has the rugged good looks required rather than the rather too smooth features of Brosnan.

Did it ever get confirmed whether he was gay? seemed to become a story around the time of Mad Max

Hardy married producer Sarah Ward in 1999; they divorced in 2004. He has a son (born 2008) with his then-girlfriend, assistant director Rachael Speed, whom he met on the set of The Virgin Queen in 2005. ... They were married in July 2014. In October 2015, their first child was born.

Interesting but as we know being married doesn't mean someone isn't gay

Every director on the planet would disagree with you. While I think he is a great actor, multiple sources say he virtually impossible to work with, demands he constantly does re-writes to the script, and makes the crew's life miserable. Not worth it. Life it too short. Be impossible on your own time, and on your own dime!

Hardy would be great. He is an amazing actor, is thoroughly convincing, has the look and is young and believable as Bond. Not sure who would even be in second place. I hear the name Elba being tossed around a lot. He could probably handle it too.

Just finished watching the mini series Taboo. Tom Hardy completely carried it despite featuring several other renowned actors. Brilliant series, brilliant actor- perfect for Bond. Idris Elba? Great actor and always enjoy his work but a black Bond? The Bond movies have already veered too far of the original Ian Fleming concept, would be almost as bad as having a female Bond......or M! 555

Tom Hardy for me, has the potential to be the best Bond ever.

I have fond memories of his early 70's 007 roles, but his early 80's ones were amongst the most tedious of the lot. Mostly down to bad writing and direction, pacing etc.

Daniel Craig was the worst Bond of all time.

He's not fit to kiss the boots of Roger Moore or Sean Connery.

Sean Connery was a real man, Roger Moore was a sophisticate.

What the hell was Daniel Craig? Neither one nor the other.

Daniel Craig was a horrible Bond. He has ears like satellite dishes and all the humour of an accounants' convention

Moore was debonaire and suave both him and Connery could bring humour to the role. Craig was always unable to do so.

Bond was fun when it did not take itself too seriously, the new producers are taking Bond far too seriously, with his boss of course having to be a female and all the other bs that lately has ruined Bond. Judi Dench as M was the worst move this franchise ever made, totally unbelievable and pure political correctness. Bond has now basically been reduced to special effects and pure action movies, all the charm is gone thanks to the politically correct brigade.

But Craig was terrible, he never, never, had any rapport with any of the female actresses. A charmless pure action film actor, Bond is just another action film for years now.

Good riddance to the worst Bond of all time. Be gone Craig!

This new one looks even worse though.

Craig was how Fleming wrote him. Read the books and you'll see how heartless and cruel he can be.

Although Moore and Connery presided over the golden years of the Bond franchise with several of the the most exciting films, as actors they're both rather wooden and narrow in range. Any other parts they've played are really just 007 tweaked a bit.

Craig on the other hand is a skilled actor with great versatility. He's not afraid to take on comic and unflattering roles - check out Hot Knives, Layer Cake, Logan Lucky and Dragon Tattoo for four very different characters, none of which remotely resemble his 007. As Bond he upset some purists by reinventing the role as something grittier and less caddish than past actors (people even objected that his hair colour was wrong), but in doing so has succeeded in avoiding just churning out another revamp.

The low point of the Bond franchise for me was late era Moore in the 80's along with the Dalton and Brosnan years. These two both seemed better suited to playing handsome geography teachers or responsible dads than international spies.

The Bond movies have gotten heavy as lead, action scenes tiresome, script nonsensical. I remember watching the opening scene of a recent Bond movie where Bond was fighting on board a helicopter when it was flying round and round over Mexico city during the day of the dead parade, right away that elicited big yawn from me...So doesn't matter who's the next Bond, I have the tendency to fall asleep way before he gets a chance to show what an irresistible dude he happens to be, etc. My conclusion is watch Casino Royale and die (to use a much overused verb in the Bond lexicon.)
