Obey social distancing rule or lockdown will return, Wissanu warns

Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam warned on Tuesday (May 5) that the lockdown would be re-imposed if people continue to ignore the social distancing measure.

 

He mentioned photos showing people were flouting the restriction as they competed to buy alcoholic beverages after the lockdown was eased on Sunday, and warned that everyone had to be more cautious.

 

“Responsible organisations are evaluating the situation. If the outbreak starts again, all shopping malls and other venues must be closed,” Wissanu said.

He said that each governor had to appraise the seriousness of the local Covid-19 situation before making decisions for their provinces, but they needed to follow the main central-government directives.

 

Wissanu said that the government would wait for 14 days while medical experts assessed the effect of easing the lockdown.

 

“However, if any place cannot follow the Public Health Ministry’s measures, the government will shut it down immediately,” he warned.

From the very beginning of this pandemic, I haven't noticed much social distancing going on at all. I was shocked when I went outside after the first week to do my weekly food shop. Life was seemingly going on as normal.

Who better than this guy to be preaching the rules right now. Some very interesting reading about him of late.

Khun Wissanu should come up and take a look at the day market in Chiang Rai. About as much social distancing as a litter of puppies.

Something is protecting Thailand from the infection rates seen in other countries. Various hypotheses as to why.

I agree with you. I went out at 11.30 this morning ( first time for 4 weeks) and there was a huge traffic jam on Thong Lor as far as I could see. It was just like the "old days".

Seems pointless in Thailand anyway with so few deaths and cases, people have to work and earn money.

If they didn't ban alcohol for so long this rush to buy alcohol would not have happened.

It made some sense over Songkran but every action has a reaction and every 'over action' has an overreaction, in this case crowded wholesale stores is the reaction to cutting off the supply of small traders who sell alcohol for a living.

 

If they do it again then it will happen again, guaranteed.

Why wasnt police, tessakit, municipal police on scene, where alcohol was sold??? Sounds like poor planning by city officials.

Anyone could expect hordes of people out buying alcohol, after a long ban was finally lifted - anyone except city officials.

 

Plan ahead next time.

Lifting the alcohol ban on a holiday weekend was mental. They’d have been better off waiting a couple of days, IMO.

Overcrowding or social distancing in the city is probably impossible to avoid but with so few cases it shouldn't be a problem.

Just avoid Illegal boxing matches and check everyone's temperature and we should be good to go.

Don't bother with lockdowns if you're not going to test & track. Just open it up and go for herd immunity. You will be forced to do so anyway.

 

Or cough up the baht and start testing.

stop thinking about if this statement or government policy is right or wrong and start thinking about what 2-6 more months of lock down means to you and what you need.

I think food supply has managed well, also cargo still moves, so that type of infra might be ok. The most immediate problem I can see is the rise in crime due to people running out of money, especially burglaries. I got a couple of baseball bats ready.

yes, they do not like the rules or the regulations as seen at the MRT station today or at the Siam BTS this afternoon when I returned from a short trip to drop off some items I donated to a family I know.

Social distancing rules will enflame tensions in most places in the world and it's totally unworkable in cities. People have to get to work, no work = no money. I not sure why the BTS/MRT are only 4 carriages when the platforms allow for longer trains.

I found it quite comprehensible, so perhaps it's you that has the isolation problem.

They threaten that put alcohol ban on again. So if 690 people violate the curfew and have almost 70 million here. Thats much? Seems to me only want control everything. How many people violate that before? Again number what they not tell! They only show numbers what make benefit to policymaker's!

Khun Wissanu should reflect on the fact that for the past few decades he and his ilk have presided over a social and economic system which has ensured that the only way that probably the only way that the majority of the population can afford to trade and buy is in crowded, cramped and insanitary environments like the Chiang Rai market, where social distancing is simply impossible. If he closes them he cuts off both the source of food and goods, but many businesses.
