I have been here 6 years and so far there were 4 major events that were supposed to bring country to its knees or at least kill the tourist industry.

Why is this country so lucky?

2014 to today?

Maybe I need help.

Military coup: routine procedure, no visible blood/shooting. Can't keep the hardened tourist away.

Bomb(s) in Bangkok: how many tourists were killed/injured? How long did media coverage abroad extend?

Australians are visiting Bali. Just think about it. Tourist have a weak memory.

What else?

For the most part food is cheap, shelter is accessible (albeit up country) and people don’t freeze to death. With that most people can get by. It isn’t ideal by any stretch of the imagination but it just means things can tick along when an external shock like this comes along.

Astute observation. Bountiful land and rivers, plentiful rain and sun and a relatively small population. And pretty much zero unemployment that I've seen in nearly 20 years here.

As a Thai guy once told me, the only homeless Thais are sick in the head. There's no cause to be.

It sounds really silly but it was one of the reasons that the Asian financial crisis wasn’t so bad in the end for a lot of people.

The tourism attractions aren’t going anywhere and they’ll be ready to go when the time is right.

I never underestimate the Thai people themselves in this formula.
