China, South Korea to be removed from Thai list of Covid hotspots

Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has proposed that China and South Korea be removed from Thailand’s list of countries at high risk for Covid-19 infection after their daily case count dropped into single digits.

 

The move, aimed at gradually restoring economic and social ties, was provisionally approved by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at a meeting on foreign policy on Thursday (May 7), according to Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin, spokesman for the government’s Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

 

"The prime minister and the CCSA committee agreed [with Anutin’s proposal],” said Dr Taweesin. “However, various steps must be taken carefully, especially those related to travelling abroad. If a country is removed from the list, we must manage access rather than allowing freedom of movement. The matter will be discussed further before a decision is made [on removing countries from the list].”

 

Dr Suwannachai Wattanayingcharoen, director-general of the Department of Disease Control, said it was right to reduce the coronavirus threat level of China and South Korea as the contagion had slowed there to just a few new cases per day. But removing China and South Korea from the list did not mean their nationals would immediately be allowed to enter Thailand, since the kingdom was still under emergency decree.

 

He added that other countries on the at-risk list were not discussed at the meeting since they are still deemed potential Covid-19 hotspots.

 

Taweesin also gave an update on Thailand’s battle against coronavirus. As of May 4, around 230,000 people have been tested for Covid-19, a ratio of 3,421 per one million population.

 

The department has targeted a test rate of 6,000 per one million, or 400,000 in total, meaning another 170,000 people nationwide will be tested. About 15,000 samples have been taken from Bangkok residents for the international standard RT-PCR (Reverse Transcription Polymerase Chain Reaction) laboratory test. Four-hundred random samples will also be taken in each province.

 

"This proactive surveillance testing is being conducted to detect asymptomatic Covid-19 cases, said Dr Suwannachai.

 

"The purpose of this testing is not to diagnose and treat the disease but to build confidence among the public. If an asymptomatic person is found to have contracted Covid-19, they will isolated for treatment.

 

Asymptomatic infections tend to disappear in 10 days on average but this depends on the person as well. This testing will curb the spread of infection as part of preparations to relax restrictions on ‘green’ [low risk] businesses in the next phase of entry from lockdown [on May 17]."

This is absolutely brilliant. They destroyed the economy by shutting it down, now they want to allow Chinese visitors back in. Of course they believe Chinese statistics on the infection rate there. Nevermind that no one else in the world believes the nonsense the Chinese come out with, but the PM of Thailand does.

 

Yes, let them all in and start all over again. Let's get the 2nd, 3rd and 4th waves underway asap. Then we can stay on strict lockdown for another year or so.

The PM is being ordered by big financial interests, a well planned entry of Wuhan virus back into Los will totally destroy tourism and industry, however China will take over with loans and bribes and Thailand will sign allegiance to China. Bye bye falung, the new Chailand is on its way

If Thailand admits arrivals from China without imposing quarantine, there's not going to be even a trickle of Chinese tourists coming, much less a flood, unless China exempts them from quarantine when they return, and there's no sign of that happening yet. So nothing to be concerned about, really.

I had one of those horrible Chinese tourists who was clearly drunk nearly wee on my trainers last year. I was exiting Suttisan MRT station and walking along the footpath, I saw this guy leaning over a railing and as I got closer he was p***ing onto the pavement and I had to dodge out of the way, it was around 8pm.

 

On the same stretch of footpath back in January there was a coach load of them blocking the footpath completely, I had push my way through, ignorant scumbags!

 

There is a small Chinese restaurant next to the local Thai bar I frequent, the Chinese who dine there are loud, mainly very drunk, spit on the floor all the time and the guys have this habit of rolling up their shirts so everyone can see their bellies, gross, but some of the Chinese girls were fit though 55.

Just out of curiosity are those hoards of tourists middle class and got some money to spare? Cuz my understanding Chinese workers are less paid than Thais and beers ciggie are cheaper there?
