Digital Economy and Society Minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta

Digital Economy and Society Minister Buddhipongse Punnakanta on May 8 held a brainstorming session with representatives of 19 state agencies and companies on ways to mitigate the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak on jobless people after the end of the contagion.

The minister, together with Nattapon Nimmanphatcharin, director of Digital Economy Promotion Agency (Depa), discussed the matter with representatives from 19 state agencies and companies -- IBM Thailand, Dell Technologies (Thailand), Cisco Systems (Thailand), Huawei Technologies (Thailand), Denso (Thailand), Microsoft (Thailand), Hitachi Asia (Thailand), Mitsubishi Electric Factory Automation (Thailand), Siam Kubota Corp, TV Direct, Advanced Info Service, Total Access Communication, True Corp, CAT Telecom, TOT, Krungthai Bank, Bank of Ayudhya, Siam Commercial Bank, and Kasikorn Business-Technology Group.

The meeting focused on how to provide assistance to the jobless, employees with salary cuts, and new graduates.

Depa will also develop the "National Digital Workplace Platform" and will work with private digital companies in arranging matching of job candidates and companies looking for non-technical workers to programmers and data scientists.

Depa will also coordinate with the digital companies to develop courses for those who want to reskill and upskill.

Things will get a lot worse before getting 'perhaps' a little better.   Most large company's will be changing the way they think about staff levels and locations, the two most expensive parts of any operation.   Streamlining and downsizing will be the 'New Normal' almost everywhere on the Planet.

Ah; forgot to say everywhere except Thai Airways....Lol.

As a BOI company owner / SMART Visa holder, I have to say that by far and away the biggest problem for me is the endless stream of required paperwork - from applications though reporting to accounting and company restructuring (as has been necessary many times due to mistakes being made by lawyers and accountants because of the complexity and ever changing nature of the regulations here).

Technology markets are global by their nature. To be truly competitive in the global market, Thailand NEEDS to drastically reduce the beaurcratic burden it puts on (particularly small) companies operating here, because under the current system we are operating at a signficant disadvantage when competing on the global stage.
