Google Photos (GP) headache

Featured Replies

I'm using this free tool from Google.  I hope they don't use my images to make clones of all my friends and family.

But....I digress.

I scan a lot of old printed photos and upload them to GP for long term storage and organization.  GP will organize them chronologically if you can set the date of the photo correctly.  Unfortunately, GP uses the date of file creation which in the case of scanned photos is the scan date.  I usually know the approximate date the photo was taken.  GP supposedly lets you edit this date so you can view them by date. When I edit the date with GP it appears to function correctly.  However, when I go back and attempt to view them in chrono order it seems like GP has instead assigned some random date within a year or two of the correct date that I just edited.  I'm baffled by this error.  I've tried just changing the date fields one at a time, and many other actions trying to have my edits retained correctly.

If I download the photo to my HD, change the creation date with OS tools and then re-upload I can get GP to retain the correct date.  Otherwise it seems to be a cr4p shoot if your original image file doesn't have the date the photo was taken.

Anyone having this problem and solved it with a simpler method?
