Paraquat, chlorpyrifos classified as ‘most’ hazardous

The Industry Ministry has classified agri-chemicals paraquat and chlorpyrifos as Type 4 hazardous substances. This classification will go into effect from June 1.

 

The classification, signed by Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, was published in the Royal Gazette on Wednesday (May 20). So far, chlorpyrifos, chlorpyrifos-methyl, paraquat and paraquat dichloride have been listed as Type 4 hazardous substances.

 

Thailand categorises hazardous substances into four types based on their control requirements. Type 1 are subjected to the least stringent regulations, while all activities related to Type 4 substances are prohibited.

 

Hence, all manufacturers, importers, exporters or possessors of these Type 4 substances have to comply with the order within the time specified by the authorities.

This is a step in the right direction. Rejecting pressure from the US, means you are typically taking the moral high road, and denying nonsense, corporate lobbies, and black hearted monsters running these corporations, and running Washington, which will nearly always choose profit, over the well being of humanity. This is a huge victory for the people of Thailand, one of the few times this administration got it right, and a significant victory for mankind. Virtually any time you say no to the US government, it is in the interests of the people, and it contributes to a better world. The US has lost it's way, from a standpoint of ethics and morality, and they can rarely be counted on to do the right thing, these days. 

 

You know it’s a dark day for America when foreign leaders have to lecture US officials about the importance of prioritizing public health over corporate profits. Yet that is what is happening now, as the Trump administration pressures Thailand not to ban three pesticides that scientific research has shown to be particularly dangerous to children and other vulnerable populations. Dow, Syngenta and Monsanto (three absolutely diabolical and incredibly destructive companies) have each merged their way to become bigger corporate behemoths in recent years, wielding their enhanced power in Washington to keep these and other money-making pesticides on the market.

I used the the 3 chemicals for years and I can confirm that they are dangerous. 

Thailand has done the right thing by banning them.

Paraquat is a dangerous substance but only to the user. Used properly it is harmless. On contact with soil it becomes inert and cannot enter the food chain. There is no evidence to support the scare talk one sees here and in other discussions but it is fashionable to be 'green' so now it will be banned here. The only effect will be to make the poor farmers poorer as their crops cannot compete with weeds and food to be more expensive whilst the do gooders sit on the bandwagon and clap their hands.

I am all for a cleaner world but this is not the way to go. Banning cars would save a lot more lives and clear up the air but that would inconvenience the rich so won't happen. Alcohol kills countless people yet wil remain a legal chemical. Lets get our priorities right.
