Tears and heartbreak as flight ban keeps farang-Thai families apart

Thus, my point: If Thai's can enter Thailand to return to their families, why can't foreigners (with families in Thailand).

How many countries would let those Thai families in now? Same same, but different countries. Don't blame Thailand for doing the same as western countries.

If living in a country that will, bring Thai family to your country.

Many. Had my Wife and I been living in the UK, she would be on ILR (or even have British Passport by now).

She would not be rejected entry into the UK. She would however, be told to quarantine at a private residence (i.e. home) or risk a £1000 fine.

This is a sensible assessment and in fact is reality. Farangs will never be classed on the same level as a Thai.

In a lot of cases the Farang's wife has been married to a Thai before. She has one or several kids.

When the  "Sponser" (Husband, BF etc) dies or they separate / divorce the "Wife" moves on and finds a new Sponsor. This is fact seen it many times. Farangs are used as stepping stones by Thai ladies.

Some will live with 2, 3 or more Farangs in their lifetime, accruing wealth as they go along. Just accept the role of the "Sponsor" and enjoy your time with your chosen Lady. If you're not happy pull the plug and find another. Plenty Ladies in Thailand looking for a "Handsome" Sponsor.

So many times on the dating websites the Thai ladies present themselves with the phrase “I need somebody to take care of me”. And the rest ,who don’t use the language like that are just smart enough to hide their true intentions. For absolute most of them farangs are the way to solve their material problems and nothing else.

Again I ask myself - why don’t we hear anything about farangs’ wives demanding from the government to let their husbands back to the country? Looks like this is a personal problem of those husbands only. The situation would change in minutes if the international money transfer would be prohibited for some reason.

Wouldn't disagree. My bed is made with wife and 2 kids, wallet empty etc. As much as I love my kids if I had my time again I wouldn't do it, I know I would be happier and richer now if I didn't..

All my missus does now is sit look into her ipad and eat.

Glad mine isn't that way.  Been together for years.  She is more often waiting for me to stop doing something else.

If one's Thai wife isn't "being a wife," any more, that is sad.  Sometimes these things can be turned-around, though - just need to find things you like doing together.  She may discover the phone is less-fun than a bicycle ride or similar.

A woman wanting a man to take care of her?  You mean, like it Always Was before feminist-theory wrecked Western civilization - leading to great misery, especially for the majority of women?

My wife and I actually like spending time together - can be doing any silly thing - just sitting and chatting, to taking a walk, bike riding, visting some temple or park, etc.

I hope my wife would find another "husband" to support her if I died - but also hope that is a long way off.

Oh yes. maybe a real wake up call for some farang's 'stuck' on the outside.

If you don't work in Thailand, you'll never qualify for a PR.

Most developed countries would recognise having a spouse or dependent in a country grounds for PR.

Work in Thailand is a requirement to qualify for a  PR................ I call boo <deleted> on that.

In order to apply to become a Thai Permanent Resident, you must meet the following criteria:

  • You must have had a Thai non-immigrant visa for at least three years prior to the submission of your application. Holders of multiple NON-Immigrant visas can not apply. You must have 3 consecutive yearly extensions in order to qualify.
  • You must be a holder of a non-immigrant visa at the time of submitting your application.
  • You must be able to meet one of these categories to apply for PR status in Thailand:
    • Investment category (minimum 3 – 10 Mil. Baht investment in Thailand)
    • Working/ Business category
    • Support a family or Humanity Reasons category: In this category, you must have a relationship with a Thai citizen or an alien who already posses a residence permit as a husband or wife; father or mother; or a guardian of a Thai child under 20 years of age.
    • Expert / academic category
    • Other categories as determined by Thai Immigration

Haha!

confused.

if it is so "heart breaking" to be seperated from ones lovely Thai wife, why travel alone and leave your lovely Thai wife alone? Why just not "integrate" and stay permanent in your new country with your "lovely wife". Why so many farang travel up and down regularly to their "own" country?

Anyway, if you can travel alone and stay alone in another country volunarely, dont make a problem when you are forced to be seperated a little bit longer. innvenient? sure. heartbreak? gimme a break. you can videochat and transfer money. u r adult, not a little lost baby crying for yr mummy.

Yes, because "petitioning the govt for a redress of greviances" is so common here.  And if they did, who would report on it?  They'd have to drink rat-poison outside of some govt-ministry to make the news.

Easy to judge when you're not in the situation. And you forget that might have children involved.

I noticed empathy is a word that is at total loss in this forum.

This just shows how low a priority foreigners are for this government, they don't care at all.

Everyone who lives here without PR or Citizenship is a tourist, even if you've been here for decades. We already knew that though.

It's simple.

Thai people with Thai family or not are allowed back and enter quarantine.

Non-Thai people with Thai family are not allowed back and enter quarantine for the one and only reason that they are not Thai.

Is there any justification for treating them differently? Of course not, but that is the way Thailand operates, discriminating against foreigners. Happens in many ways that would be off-subject here. It's part of the culture.

The Thai apologists, those who see nothing wrong with being treated as a second-class citizen, will tell you it's their country and they can do what they like, but that doesn't address the issue.

It's a bit of a kicker. I went out on contract in January and was due to come back to Thailand in May. Now locked out until at least July. Got to work again in September, so at this rate I might not get to sleep in my own bed or see my own children again this year.

Sure, there are worse things happen to people, and sooner or later those of us in this position will hopefully get home again, so it's not the end of the world. But some of the comments on this thread are pretty nasty and actually reveal more about the people making them than they do about the Covid situation itself.

Just saying...

Do any of you guys think I will be able to go back to Thailand???

I'm male 75 yr old with health problems heart & bladder cancer (now in remission).

I've got a lovely sincere relationship g/f for 7 yrs.

It's a big worry for me if because of my old age & poor health that I won't be able to go back.

Thanks

Perhaps for the same reason no one has heard from most of those stuck outside of Thailand (except on this forum).

In reality, the vast majority of those stuck outside of Thailand, with Family in Thailand are simply 'putting up with it' and waiting for the borders to relax - there's not really much else we can do, or wives are in the same situation, in many cases a far more difficult situation with the home / online schooling etc

You need to re-write that comment...

I think you mean like most Thai women you have been exposed to - your comments outline a very specific demographic or poor women from the lower socioeconomic echelons of Thai society.

The reality is that Western men in Thailand date and are married to women of all facets of the socio-economic-educational spectrum, many are not suckers and are not in relationships which commence via transaction or a need for economic security - in short, perfectly normal relationships one would have in the West.

If you can't see this its because of the limited circles you move in.

Things will settle down Ray, concentrate on staying fit and healthy as you can, then at the least a VOA should be an option when flights resume, if you have plenty of cash you can make decisions from there as to how you manage to stay longer if you wish

You've failed to recongise the varying situations many are in.

Those who work on ships, rigs, or working a rotation in other industries - some on a 4weeks on weeks off schedule etc - this work is common.

Its impossible to take your family with you when working in such industries.

Your dumbed down over simplification only serves to highlight a myopic perspective, your closing comments just highlight what a tooling troll you are.

There is nothing funny about families being separated.

Adults can cope (to an extent) but children don't understand why they aren't allowed to see their dad/mum !!

They might not understand but kids adjust quite quickly, what about the kids in the UK and elsewhere during WW2 who didn’t see their fathers for years and some never again plus those sent from the cities to live in the country.

Life goes on.

These days it's very easy to transfer money and then there is facetime or whatever to see the wife and sprogs as often as one pleases. I really don't think the Thai gov are going to read too much into tears and heartbreak and speed up any exceptions for these poor stranded farangs.

Sadly, I agree with you. And that leaves a lot of families separated.

I think the gripe is how this is being handled. As many have pointed out, it would appear that the Thai Government does not really show any consideration for those foreign spouses of Thai citizens - its seems not to recognise the right to keep a family unit together.

The criticism with this is that it is different from many Western nations where in similar circumstances the foreign spouse has better rights and would be able to return to their family.

Given the potential for second, third, fourth waves of this virus and potentially other viruses in future, the lock-down measures Thailand has taken and consequent separation of family for some it would be well worth considering moving family to a country which does not prevent incoming travel of a spouse when things get sticky.

i.e. While working on a rotation in the Middle East it may well be worth moving my Wife and Son to the UK.

My Wife (who has a Masters) could work in the UK easily and would fit in easily, we're in the UK twice a year as it is. My Son can school here instead (although I do think the International School he's at is better than the UK comprehensive schools).

Being separated from my family because I was overseas working at the onset of this crisis has given me serious cause to reconsider where we are located in the future.

Instead of being a tight a&&. Why don't the the falangs stuck outside of Thailand buy their wife and family tickets to go to where the Falang is staying. Maybe because that same country has the SAME restrictions about non nationals entering the country. <deleted> get over your not allowed into Thailand cause it's the same all over the world. If you don't have a passport for that country you DONT GET IN. GET IT????

Before making statements like that you should check your facts. Yes only Thai repatriation flights incoming agreed. However there are a few carriers flying out of Bangkok. Take flights to the UK for example. Non stop EVA flys on a Sunday. KLM and Lufthansa fly most days to the UK 1 stop.

I didn't know that there are flights out so does that mean that British citizens etc can fly out anytime they want?

Life goes on.

Indeed life goes on, and it always will.

But families don't 'need' to be separated at this time, this is not World War 2 with fathers going away to fight for their country, the analogy is idiotic.

This (the point we are discussion) is about families being separated because someone in a position of decision making power has made the decision to ignore the plight of separated families.

If Thai Citizens are being permitted entry to Thailand, the decision to prevent entry to foreigners with fixed ties to Thailand is unnecessary - this is the complaint people have. We can deal with it, our families can deal with it and life will go on. But, it doesn't need to be this way.
