Political activist Srisuwan Janya will lodge a petition with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Wednesday, seeking an investigation into the conduct of the Ministry of Defence (MoD) and the Disease Control Department (DCD) for demanding the public’s smart phone usage data from service providers.

The secretary-general of the Thai Constitution Protection Association said today (Tuesday) that he found the conduct of the MoD and DCD to be a breach of the rights, liberties and human dignity of the people, as enshrined in Section 4 of the Constitution.

Their conduct could also violate the Privacy of Information Protection Act, said Mr. Srisuwan, as he brushed aside the claims by the MoD that it was in the process of gathering opinions from all stakeholders about the means to contain the spread of COVID-19, and has not received information about smart phone usage from the service providers. He also dismissed the claim, by the MoD, that phone usage information could be used for containing the spread of the contagion.

The Ministry of Health might have cause to find out this information but not the Military!

Should we say our goodbyes to Mr. Srisuwan now?

Thai Constitution Protection Association

That would be the constitution that has been re -  written more times in recent history than any other country and also wasn't fully recited by this 'elected' government.

Does anyone actually believe…that personal information made available to a corrupt and unethical organization will only be used for legitimate purposes?

I never use the internet on my mobile, <deleted> the lot of em......to easy.

This is the same guy who complained about Thanathorn's loan to the Future Forward Party.  He seems to be an equal opportunity pain in the neck.

Perhaps this complaint will make up for some of his others!

Governments in general routinely spy through communications devices...computers, cell phones and so on...

They are protecting the government from terrorists...don't you know...????

Government zealots are not above downloading incriminating files...much like planting drugs on a suspect or in a vehicle.

But it is all for your own safety!

They don't need to monitor an app for this. The technology already exists and is in use for "security" reasons in other countries. Maybe the MoD is looking for a cheap way out, or perhaps their technology and/or expertise is not up to the job.

A conspiracy post has been reported and removed, the reply was removed as well.

They are clearly just teeing this up for when they eventually relax the rules on gatherings.  If the Uni students stage a large protest against the government, all they need to do is say someone in that crowd tested positive. Then they can force the Telcos to provide a list of anyone in the area of the demonstration.

Don't trust this government with anything these days - at this point it's a matter of survival for them and they will be desperate.

Yes there are people who don't care about the affiliation of others just about what they do. IMHO that is how it should be. Don't judge people on their affiliation but on their actions. I mean I would even support Trump if he did something good. Its about actions of people not just attacking them because they are of a different political affiliation. There is too much of that going on in Thailand. Good example was the murder MP from Pheu Thai and the drug minister from the current government. Both sides protected their own criminal while attacking the others criminal. No moral high ground for either side.

Are they using COVID19 as a cover to track down all their critics?

I do wish they would Monitor Mine. No one believes what a pest our Kids are.

good tool to check where the opposition is, when, where, with whom ...

and how to crush it, if needed

Yes indeed and I have already suggested a "hidden agenda" behind the new QR code. Huawei involved by any chance????

In all fairness (?!), the "Thai Chana platform" is nothing but a website your phone accesses, in the process passing your phone number (without it, the whole thing wouldn't make much sense, right?), but it's not an app that "does things" on your phone.

Thai PBS says: "Saranee said Thai people are totally unaware that the MoD is also working on an app, in addition to the Thai Chana platform, to track people without their knowledge". Now that makes you wonder, as the MoD doesn't have a task/mission/purpose to track your health.

But even an app on a smartphone has limits (quite a few of those, too) to what it can "see" and "tell". The big ones like Google, FB, IG etc. can collect lots of info/conclusions about users, mostly from actual user interactions with their platforms/apps - but they don't have access to other things on your phone, and you can configure which apps can use your location etc. While there are a few creepy aspects with what can be "detected" about you when collecting your data through interactions with services you often use (Google, FB), there's more that belongs into the conspiracy theory realm and not in your worries.

That's worrying.

I don't have the Thai Chana app on my phone. Maybe someone who does should go to their settings and look at app permissions to see what the app can access.

The spying by these apps has exploded.  In the past they asked for minimal app permissions now you cannot even use most without adding location, phone, microphone etc.  This should tell people something.

No it's BBBig BBBrother Tactics. Won't happen overnight But it will happen. ????

Time to bin those not-very-smart phones. Or bin your freedom.

There are numerous cases of so-called harmless, fun apps that secretly embed into other apps on your device. They have ways of bypassing the permissions. Many are developed in China.

But feel free to put it on your phone, I have and will not.

Frankly there's no need to deal with it any longer, since it seems the enforcement of logging in and out has fallen off in typical Thai style.  Just point the phone at the QR code - nobody checks, sign in as under a fake name (sorry I've taken Elvis) or just ignore it altogether.

Who would have thought Thailand has a Human Rights Commission. Maybe they just have the sign.

Maybe their signs are made by the same company that makes those food safety signs on food stalls.
