SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian federal and state leaders met on Friday to discuss the country's next steps in response to the coronavirus pandemic, a day after the country reported its biggest one-day rise in new infections in more than two months.

The national cabinet has committed to removing the bulk of Australia's social distancing restrictions by the end of July, although each state and territory was left to determine their own pace.

However, a renewed COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria, the country's second most populous state, has led some health experts to question that timing.

Victoria reported its ninth consecutive day of double digit new cases on Thursday and is responsible for around 200 of Australia's 270 active cases.

In a bid to curtail more infections, ambulances and mobile test centres were deployed across the state to carry out a testing blitz.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison has struck a bullish tone on reopening the economy as Australia heads into its first recession in nearly 30 years, insisting the country's health system can cope with a rise in new cases.

Morrison on Thursday unveiled a A$250 million ($170 million)recovery package of grants and loans for the arts sector and said he would discuss the reopening of venues at Friday's meeting.

Australia has recorded a total of around 7,500 infections, including 104 deaths, well below many other nations.

Every state has those marches mate...and while I think they were stupid to have them, mentioning the other state marches doesn’t fit your narrative now does it?

Factually incorrect. Causes identified so far are...

30% of people held in quarantine at hotels not being tested for Covid prior to departure into the community

Some security guards at the hotels had sex with  passengers who were later identified as Covid positive

Some families have held large social gatherings, only takes one person to infect others.

yes and most infections where caused by religious gatherings for the end of ramadan.

Guess the TAT believes that discussion was about booking holidays to Thailand

Thats what happens when they let 1000's of people gather for protests, all people that were involved should hang their heads in shame for destroying all the good work of lock downs prior to that, complete and utter fools the lot of them.

Only when it has become abundantly clear (in about 6 - 12  months) that the number of deaths, destruction and misery caused by government policy are many hundreds of times greater than the actual virus, will people realise they've been had. But by that time, certain factions are hoping that everyone is permanently under control with the elimination of cash, travel restrictions and surveillance.

Open your mouth too wide and you won't be able to buy food or leave your house.

I haven't read any of this in the Australian media.. And I'm currently living in Melbourne.. Where did you supposedly hear or read this? Sounds like absolute BS unless you have a reference to your claim..

From your language i guess you access right of centre media., you know, those beacons of truth - Lol. Moving on bullet points were from yesterday's The Australian newspaper. Except the sex allegation, also on TV & radio reports, not my problem if you don't read The Australian which I do six days a week with my early morning coffee , double shot latte no less, on the Sunshine Coast. Thankfully few from Melbourne at the moment, though there was a really bad tempered  customer this morning - likely from MLB????

The Australian has a paywall so other media with similar content,

Don't know about 'most' as far I know not captured in stats, but yes some Eid family gatherings. For sure some from the right wing will get their knickers in a twist and ignore there would have been some large weddings and birthday celebrations etc.
