People wishing to renew their driver’s licence will not be required to undergo written and driving tests until the Covid-19 situation comes to an end.

The Royal Gazette website published the Department of Land Transport’s new regulations on Wednesday (July 1).

The new rules, signed by the department’s director general Jirut Wisanjit, said mandatory written and driving tests have been cancelled for people whose licence has expired as per the following:

• The holder of a licence that has expired more than one year but not exceeding three years between March 31 and September 30, 2020, will not be required to take a written test;

• The holder of a licence that has expired for more than three years between March 31 and September 30, 2020, will not be required to take a driving test.

These regulations have been in effect since June 8.

The reason cited for this cancellation of tests is to prevent the spread of Covid-19 and to help those who have not been able to renew their driving licence due to lockdown measures.

How hard is it to get a driving licence here?   My Hong Kong Licence expired 20 years ago, so I'd need at least 15 mins in a manual car to familiarise myself with driving again before doing a test.

Has anyone taken driving lessons in Bangkok?

This news is only about licenses which expired more than a year ago, nothing new if the license expired less than a year ago.

Somehow this didn't reach the DLT in Pattaya.

I went there this morning to make an appointment for renewal.

As my car licence expired 1 month short of 3 years, I do fall into the category described in this article.

They told me I had to do the theoretical test.

The last time I went to the test centre with the mrs the so called test involed stopping at a white line, driving down a lane of cones and reversing, not hitting any and reversing in and out of a box area of cones. As well as colour blindless and reaction tests as well as watching a film where most people look at their phone or sleep. So they can get, or at least a few years ago, a license without ever driven on the road. What could possibly go wrong ????

It is enforced nationwide to curb spread of Covid-19 and it is in force at list until end of July.  After that they may continue with the watching mandatory 1 hour video at Land and Transport office.

Not in Chiang Mai. They gave me an appointment in 10 days to watch a video at the DLT and extend my license.

Well that's what I have been told. And what I did. Maybe Chiang Mai arranged it differently as there are many foreign residents. Who would know.
