Now you need rubber gloves when handling Thai veg, study suggests

A study of Thai market vegetables usually eaten raw suggests that consumers should not only wash the vegetables in chemicals but wear rubber gloves when handling them.

 

The Parasitic Disease Research Center of Suranee University said on Facebook that more than a third (35.1%) of a sample size of vegetables contained tapeworms. 

 

Among the veg used in the analysis were parsley, coriander, basil, spring onions and lettuce. 

 

But the worst offender was celery. Nineteen out of 30 samples contained tapeworm or 63.3%. 

 

The tapeworm can enter the body via the skin. 

 

So in addition to using cleaning chemicals to rid the veg of the tapeworms people should wear rubber gloves when handling them.

 

A solution of vinegar can be used but veg needs to be soaked in it for 30 minutes until it is safe to eat.

Is nothing safe any more ?   30 minutes pickling of lettuce  probably won't taste much like lettuce any more  but I haven't tried...yet... wouldn't tapeworm more likely enter the body through the mouth via eating the produce ?

Good news ???? being a natural carnivore who 'suffers' the eating of rabbit food, appreciate the reason to avoid it, thank you.

You are quite right.

 

Tapeworms live in humans' and animals' intestines only, larvae or eggs being excreted with their feces. That tapeworms are actually found on fresh vegetables can only mean one thing: Vegetable farmers are fertilizing their fields with steaming piles of... well, you know what.

 

Either that or the market vendors themselves are tapeworm carriers and contaminate the produce by never properly washing up after toilet visits. As if we hadn't known all along...

 

Both possible scenarios are equally disgusting.  

 

And forget about the "30-day vinegar treatment". Honestly, who does that? Certainly not roadside restaurants and food stalls. After all, as the article notes, these vegetables are "usually eaten raw". Pickling them for 30 minutes means you're being served a sour salad instead of fresh, raw vegetables.

 

Is there nothing safe to eat anymore in this country? If things continue like that, shoppers will soon need to don hazmat suits when visiting wet markets.

Its Very alarming and disturbing news. And just eating steaks with beers isn't a long term solution either.

this has now put me off fresh veg and anything that contains lettuce so that rules out any sort of burger or similar takeaway foods that contain ground grown veg

Now you have a better idea of where they empty the trucks that pump out the septic tanks.  Seen them fertilizing fruit orchards, but not veg plots.

Ill probably start eating a de-wormer once per year. Pharmacies got em. There are also herbal options.

Btw i pulled one out of my dogs ass the other day. It was prob 20 cms long accompanied with a bit of blood. Nasty......

No wonder I'm losing weight.

I always cringe when I see meats and vegetables being handled by numerous Thai shoppers...how many have just come from the toilet...or have not washed their hands all day?  Gloves would be a big improvement!

Pig <deleted> is used as fertilizer in Thailand. In Thailand, tapeworms live in humans and pigs (in the meat and feces). In the West, tapeworms have mostly been eradicated from pigs and humans. The eggs and worms also get onto vegetables when infected people handle them after not washing their hands when they go to the bathroom. 

A lot of Thai's have worms, and other parasites such as liver flukes. Up in Isaan I have seen the septic tank trucks emptying out in farmers' fields.

The wife and I take a dose of Praziquantel every six months.

This BS has come up regularly and has been debunked. It's total rubbish promoted by quacks. Gloves should be worn when handling fish or meat though to prevent bacterial infections. 

Vegetables should be well washed with fresh tap water (not well water) in Thailand. That is unless you are a.hypochondriac in which case you should only eat canned imported food and wash your dishes with bottled (imported preferred) or boiled  water.

To say that Thais don't wash their hands after going to the loo is preposterous however dirty foreigners might not.

 Suranee University is not a Medical University. They specialize in Civil Aviation. Great source. Try Chulalongkorn or Mahidol Universities if you want real sources.
