What kind of visa can do.

  • Tourist=> becoming increasingly difficult to stay long-term, do you really want the hassle in later life?

That leaves:-

  • Work => probably not applicable (needs a Work Permit and a stack of company paperwork - is your son/family running a business that could help?)
  • Marriage to a Thai => maybe
  • Education => learn Thai (sadly, heavily abused in the past so could be a difficult route)
  • Thailand Elite => $$ but little hassle if you have the cash

None of the above requires insurance, but of course they're not free or necessarily easy.

  • You could possibly get in as a dependant of your son @ubonjoe would know what's what there.

^Also Type O retirement visa, though it will not be possible to get this until the borders are open again.

This visa will require 800,000 baht in a Thai bank account or proof of a pension of 65,000 baht per month.

You cannot apply for this visa in your home country, but need to apply for it in a nearby Thai embassy or consulate (Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, etc).
