Seems like there was lots of dosh involved.

What was this lucrative Forex 3D scheme?

https://www.thaipbsworld.com/tag/forex-3d-scam/

Thailand’s Justice Minister Somsak Thepsuthin has agreed to accept an alleged foreign exchange Ponzi scheme as a special case to be investigated by the Department of Special Investigation.

The decision to treat the online Forex-3D investment scheme as a special case came after a group of investors filed a complaint with Mr. Somsak, claiming that they had each invested at least 50,000 baht with the company, which promised them an average return of 10% per month, but they have been unable to withdraw their money since the company stopped paying them the promised returns several months ago.

About 30,000 people are believed to have investments with the company, totalling several billions of baht.

Mr. Somsak disclosed today that, so far, over 2,000 investors, with some 411 million baht in investments in the scheme, have registered complaints with the DSI by scanning the department’s QR code.

One of the investors, Ms. Warapairin Thanawarisporn, told the media that she invested about two million baht late last year, on the advice of a close friend of the company’s proprietor, with a promise that she would receive monthly returns of 5-10%.

She said that she found the company’s profile credible, adding that she received her returns on time for several months until May, when the payments suddenly stopped and she found herself unable to contact the company’s proprietor.

It is reported that the company recruited several celebrities to pitch their “online Forex-3D” scheme to potential investors.

There was a 'get rich quick' scheme running in our area last year and the year before. The guy next door to us tried to get Mrs Owl interested. A lot of the villagers were eager to participate, but didn't have any dosh.

This could be the same scam; or similar.

Yes, but the article says it's "worth" 27 million baht. It most certainly is not worth that much.

It's worth what a buyer is prepared to pay for it.

A friend in Hua Hin says his GFs family has "never met a pyramid scheme they didn't like.". It appears to go hand and hand with laziness and poor education.  As stated in the article, the only thing holding many back from repeats is their inability to come up with any more cash.

The price of something and the value are completely different.

The car’s worth 4m at best.

It is about the same price in Malaysia and Singapore

The reason for the taxes is to keep the domestic sales of locally built, bottom of the range cars up.

BMW and (I think) MB assemble locally but they cannot source enough quality local parts and materials to qualify for the lower tax brackets so their cars are still 3-4 times the price that they sell for in the UK.

I don't believe so. I think the extreme tax on exotic imported cars is designed to screw the rich who have so much money it doesn't matter. In fact these people probably appreciate the high taxes so the cars they purchase will continue to be rare items which they can display with pride.

Thailand has taken quite a while to wake up. These unsophisticated Ponzi schemes died out in most developed countries in the 1980's and 1990's. I'm sure there are some among us were stung in our earlier, more naive days. I was LOL. The lure of easy money gets the better of many otherwise sensible people. All the people receiving their monthly checks are telling all their friends about their new found money-trees, and everyone wants to get in lest they miss out. It's the "fear of missing out" (FOMO) that gets many in. FOMO is a well known expression in the trading world.

The wife said she would surrender to police at the end of the month.

I thought that it was normal to arrest people on the spot ,Take  them in custody and than Front the Judge Than go on Remand in Jail if they don't get Bail and wait for the Trial. but hey this is Los .must give the people time to  Hide/Escape/Leave the Country.

It is, but she's in hiding so the police cannot do what they would do in normal circumstances but, hey, this is Thaivisa forum.

Your opinion of the price of something and it's actual value in Thailand are completely different, not to say, irrelevant.   Doubtless you could locate a similar car for B4m, though.

Reminds me of a farmer friend, who had 500 acres ten miles from Gilroy.  He was telling me about Sun Valley, ID.  It was 30 years ago, and I wasn't familiar with it.  But he described it as, you know Aspen, Colorado..yes, of course, well in Aspen people have a million in the bank and drive a Benz.  In Sun Valley, they have ten million in the bank and drive a VW Bug.

The case continues.

Possibly did not have the time free in her diary to fit in a visit to those pesky investigators, beside the private jet is being serviced currently. Needs to contact RedBull heir for accommodation, and pack a wardrobe

Any Olympic games coming up, always a good time to leave the country with a promise to return (at some time in the future after your return is arranged - oh sorry that one fell on its a rse)
