Trump says coronavirus under control as U.S. death toll rises

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said the coronavirus outbreak is as under control as it can get in the United States, where more than 155,000 people have died amid a patchy response to the public health crisis that has failed to stem a rise in cases.

The Republican president continued to press for U.S. schools to reopen in an overnight Twitter post, and defended his administration's response to the virus in an interview with the Axios news website released late on Monday.

"They are dying, that's true," he said. "It is what it is. But that doesn't mean we aren't doing everything we can. It's under control as much as you can control it. This is a horrible plague.”

Coronavirus cases continue to surge in the country, and dozens of U.S. states have had to pause or roll back their reopening plans. The White House coronavirus task force coordinator, Dr. Deborah Birx, said on Sunday the virus was "extraordinarily widespread" in rural areas as well as cities.

Stephen Hahn, the Food and Drug Administration's commissioner, said on Tuesday the outbreak was still not under control and urged Americans to "take this seriously."

"This virus is still with us, and it is around the country and we're seeing these cases come not just in the United States but around the world," Hahn said on ABC.

With U.S. deaths averaging more than 1,000 a day in the last two weeks, Trump pressed the view of deaths in proportion to the number of cases instead of as a proportion of the population, in which the United States fares worse than other Western nations.

In the Axios interview, Trump again insisted that increased diagnostic testing in the United States accounted for the increase in cases, an assertion disputed by health experts who say expanded testing accounts for some, but not all, of the growth in cases.

Health experts also call it a key tool in fighting the spread of the disease, which has been detected in at least 4.7 million people across the United States.

Problem is that it's too macabre.  It's no longer about crowd size, his friendship with [whoever], the size of his weenie, etc.  Laughing at a statement involving a body count don't cut it.  Can't you just see Jake Tapper doing that and Breitbart running the headline "Radical Left Fake News Personality Finds Covid deaths laughable."

But I did see Chris Matthews interviewing Ted Cruz during the 2016 primaries, and he laughed in Ted's face through the whole thing.  Infotainment at it's most entertaining.

Well, for once he  was honest when he said the following;

"They are dying, that's true. And it is what it is," Trump said. "But that doesn't mean we aren't doing everything we can. It's under control, as much as you can control it."

I am no fan of the man, but he's got a valid point. Within the context of the US culture and the views of a large number of Americans, his administration is doing everything that it can.

You see it every day in TVF with the extremist statements.

Americans in large numbers will not listen, nor consider scientific fact. There are tens of millions who are creationists, who are functional illiterates, who barely completed high school, who do not even know the basic facts of their own country's electoral system.  These people will not accept social distancing or the wearing of masks. They are rabid followers of conspiracy promoters like Alex Jones and Rush Limbaugh, accepting whatever they say as the gospel truth.  No on challenged Alex Jones when he claimed that the mass murder of children at Sandy Hook was fake. Wackos like Jenny McCarthy and her false narrative on vaccines go unchallenged. Some state governors had it in their power to  protect their citizens, but chose not too because they were in fear of this segment of America.

Outsiders do not grasp how divided and sectarian the country has become. Americans who have been outside the country for a few years  do not see how their country has frayed at the seams. The USA is a country where some people were able to spread a hateful lie about the former President Obama being born in Kenya and not Hawaii, unchallenged. Elsewhere,  people would have  said no and taken such liars to task.

Taking all of the aforementioned into consideration, it is indeed believable when Trump says they did what they could and it is what it is. A large part of the USA is ignorant, afraid and angry. His administration's strategy reflects that sad fact.

He has done nothing other than to play on ignorance, promote mistrust in science foster and exacerbate division.

‘In the Axios interview, .....’

The Axios interview is arguably one of the most damning indictments of Trump.

It’s painful to watch and hear his ignorant, callous and out of touch responses to

reasonable questions any competent leader would have coherent and logical answers to.

His doubling down on support for Maxwell is something needs examination and explanation.

I urge all, supporters and those opposed to Trump to watch the whole of this Axios interview.

Doing so will help better inform future discussion.

Why they (Ivanka, et al) allow him into these situations is beyond me.

I can only assume that no one can tell him "No" - even when he's in a "grabby" mood - so this is the result.

Any CEO, school principal, police chief, dog-catcher would be "shown the door" after such a "performance".

The fumbling with the charts was especially damning.

Actually, there's been a few interviews where Trump embarrasses himself "hugely."  Chris Wallace, Lester Holt, just to name a few.  Simply put, if the interviewer challenges him on his lies, Trump will fold like a cheap suit.  And Trump will lie, guaranteed.  Or if the interviewer challenges Trump's knowledge about...practically anything.  The man doesn't know squat about anything.

That's why it's so important that there is a real-time fact-checker at any Presidential debate where Trump is involved.  Trump has to be fact-checked on any comment he makes because he will lie his ass off if not challenged.

Of course I meant anything related to governing.  But if you ask him how to cheat at golf, or how to use your celebrity to get into a girl's pants, or how to get MAGA rubes all excited at a rally, or racist words for any group of people, or how to rip-off contractors, or how to cheat on your taxes, or how to make people think you're rich and successful when you're not....etc., he's probably quite knowledgeable.

Trump would still say the coronavirus is under control even if he was the last man on earth and everyone else had died of corona. He's beginning to remind me of that Iraqi minister of information (or spokesman for the Iraqi goverment, something like that) at the beginning of the first Gulf War. He was giving press conferences and assuring everyone that everything was under control and that Iraq was not under attack, while outside you could hear the air raid alarms and bombs and missiles exploding.

You cannot realistically use the ratio of deaths per number of cases as a representative figure to show how well they are doing.  The number of cases is not a constant and, as 45 himself claims, they do more testing than anybody else in the world and therefore find more cases.  USA has a pretty good health system and should, hopefully, be more effective in treatment preventing death.  End result is the number of deaths can be kept lower whilst the number testing positive is only getting higher.  An engineered statistic to show how well they are doing.  Today 100 deaths per 1000 cases is 1 in 10, tomorrow 200 deaths per 4000 cases is 1 in 20!

Number of deaths per population is the more accurate as the health system, as said before, is providing good care and reducing deaths whilst the baseline figure of total population is a constant and provides a valid comparison.

Sounds like someone was told to find some figures to justify his claims.

Excuse me, but are you referring to the TVF Virology Expert community? I think you should admire how they managed to pry themselves away from their groundbreaking work of watching Youtube videos to disprove the global warming/climate change conspiracy to become instant experts on COVID-19. Their country's electoral system? Come on! They're Constitutionalists whose legal scholarship is unimpeachable too!

Just a side note: what a smelly, steaming pile of ...

Anyways: this interview was the worst thing, I have seen Trump do and I have seen A LOT!

The interviewer gave him soft- balls that were unbelievable!

Trump basically had several penalties without a goalkeeper and he still managed it, to talk absolute garbage!

I would criticize him on substance...but there was NONE!

"It is what it is"...Jesus, man!

Ane that stunt with the props, they had prepared for him eg his "charts", was just beyond the pale!

But still: I can't wait for the usual suspects to put a spin on it and tell us, what we were witnessing was eithet

a) the greatest mind of the greatest president ever...at work or ...

b) just something to own the libs! A joke, if you will!

Let's be perfectly clear: a joke it was, 100%!
