Migrant labourers will be allowed to work in Thailand for longer

The Cabinet yesterday (August 4) agreed to extend the period in which migrant labourers from three countries – Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar – are allowed to work in Thailand to strengthen the country’s workforce during an economic recovery, deputy government spokesperson Rachada Thanadirek said.

The Labour Ministry had proposed allowing migrant labourers again into the country, which allows entry to two groups from neighboring countries:

1) Some 649,046 foreign workers who hold a passport, certificate of identity or travel documents will be permitted to work in Thailand from August 1 to October 31. Their work permit can be extended to March 31, 2022, provided that their employers submit an extension form at the provincial employment office where the migrant works before October 31. The migrants must then complete a physical check-up at a state hospital and other screening processes before January 31, 2021, and apply for an identification card for non-Thai nationals at a district office from February 1 to March 31, 2021.

2) Some 92,572 foreign workers who hold a border pass will be permitted to work in Thailand until March 31, 2022, provided they register at the provincial employment office where they work before October 31 and pass a physical check-up at a state hospital, as well as purchase health insurance (except for those already under social security) before January 31, 2021.

Ratchada added that the term must be extended every three months. If the labourer wishes to continue working with the same employer, they must file for an extension at the provincial employment office before the term expires.

Ridiculous! So, not the maddeningly silly requirements and £1,000 quarantine like the rest of us then.

Very hypocritical and lopsided for how they are welcomed and for how foreigners are treated.

If you have been following, India has outbreaks. That's creeping to the East and will enter Thailand through Myanmar. Test & trace ..

I guess the hi-so miss their maids. Ours has been with us the whole time.

Same money though! Just work longer.

They're experiencing that the unnecessary round trip travel requirement has come back to bite them in the ass.

While COVID exists this will need to be extended to other forms of entry if they want tourists to return. 30 day entry stamps should be a thing of the past. 90 days should do it.

The days when someone will go to Bangkok for a few days, then tour around 4 or 5 other destinations in south east Asia are long gone - at least for a while.

Its not the Hi-So missing their Maids.

Its the Construction Companies and the Farming Labour Agencies that need their virtually Slave Labour supply.

And what about the thousands of lazy Thais who are unemployed, pay them to sit around on the thumbs while slave labour builds the roads & bridges, get them back to work with a shovel !!!

Even Thais know their fellow countrymen are inferior workers, better get more diligent people from the neighbours.

If they forced all the police, soldiers and administrators currently occupying "inactive positions" to do these jobs, there would be no need for all these potentially infected migrant workers, lol.
