Where To Buy Epsom Salts, Celtic Sea Salt And Blackstrap Molasses

Recommended Posts

I've been running around Bangkok trying to find a decent health food store. No luck so far.

I'm especially looking for epsom salts, celtic sea salt and blackstrap molasses.

In desperation, I've been to several Villas and Emporium.

Thanks in advance.

Hi ,

Iam not sure about the other stuff but I live in Pattaya & it took me along time to find out in Thai they call Epsoms salt Da klua . I was able to find at the only chinese shop near the temple in south Pattaya.

I heard ther was another chinese shop in the naklua area in Pattaya.

I would bet if you ask for Da klua in Yarawat Area (chinatown) in Bangkok they would most likely have the epsoms salt. Don't bother going to pharmacies or any hospitals - they apparently don't cater to farangs & do not know about the medical benifits of epsom salts. hope this is helpfull as it can be a pain in the butt to find what you need in thailand sometimes(even though epsom salt is just purified sea salt!

Beardog,

Thank you very much for your help. I've been here two years and it is indeed a mixture of frustration at what I cannot get / find, and amazement at what I can buy over the counter!

While I'm waiting to go to Chinatown, I'll just use sea salt.

No I picked the De Klua up in Pattaya at one of 2 of the Chinese herb stores one is on 3rd road right across from the temple. The other is in the Naklua district.

I guess you didn't have any luck In Bangkok?

I use sea salt 40 baht for 15-20kilo bag for grwing coconuts available in most mom & pops shops.

For a foot soak or body parts it looks like it would work fine, but if your taking internaly I am not sure as I can tell it is not pure(or expensive like the chinese shop)

If you hit a dead end in Bkk Desi or Mike I will Pick you up the amt you want & send it via bus or mail if you post the money in back into my acct. I have had to do this 5 times in Thailand. Be glad to make a run into Pattaya if you need!

Cheers

Glad you were able to find it. if Pattaya had it BKK had to. They all looked at me & my girl like I was people bah till we found

the Chinese gal who knew what magnesium sulfate was!

Thanks for the tip on this supplier as I will definitely add it to my list of contacts. It is strange to find anything in the latin or English based names in Thailand. Even in Indonesia they use a lot of Latin based names, along with their own language of names.

Glad you got & thanks for the contact!

cheers

BearDog,

I have just moved to Pattaya and need Epsom Salt (De Klua), magnesium sulfate. I know 3rd road a little. Which temple are you referring to ??? Not Wat Chai on South Pattaya Road ??? The herbal shop there is a Thai herbal shop and not a Chinese herbal shop. Please tell me specifically where the herbal shop is on 3rd road, I would like to go there. I tried two accupuncturists here and they do not mix herbs.

You also mentioned Naklua. On what street is the chinese shop there ??? I am trying to find some chinese herbs. They are hard to find even being so close to China.

Hi, it seems all who answered the original post did not read past the salt issue. As I myself have been looking for Blackstrap Molasses and finally found it, I would like to share this info.

I first looked in Villa Market in Pattaya, they only have Grandmas Molasses which is not blackstrap (molasses is after the first cooking, blackstrap is after the third cooking).

I went to Foodland but they did not have any molasses. Then I checked Central, no luck there either.

So I finally went to Friendship market on Pattaya South road, As there seems to be several small supermarkets named "Friendship" in Pattaya, this one is located just after South road and third road crossing; coming from Sukumvit it is on the left side of the road. (There are three main roads leading from Sukumvit to Beach road, North, Central and South roads or Nua, Klang and Tai).

As I have never been in this store and it looks like a chinese tempel or something from the outside, I was expecting it to be a chinese thing with dried tiger balls, deer horn powder, Dried Yak liver and stuff like that. I was very surprised to see that it was in fact a copy of Foodland but with slighly cheaper items and less selection.

After searching the store several times I finally found Blackstrap molasses hidden among the Honey Jars. It is difficult to find so search carefully and on the front of the jar it just says "Molasses". You have to turn the jar to see the side where it says "Blackstrap Molasses".

Its imported from Australia. Strange because as I understand Thailand is one of the bigger exporters of Molasses.

In another thread, someone very kindly gave instructions to go to a pharmacy near Nana. I did and managed to find the elusive epsom salts. As of last Saturday, 5th Jun 2010, they had some in stock. Directions to the shop:

From Sukhumvit head towards Ploenchit. Staying on the main Sukhumvit road, once you pass Nana Soi 4, to your left there will be a petrol station on the corner. Next to that is a small chemist shop and next to that is a bigger chemist shop, double fronted. Ask for the Dee-Kleua. He has it prepackaged in kilo bags for 50 baht.

Before that, I had tried to find it elsewhere and had no luck in big, small, old or new pharmacies. The older guy in the shop in Nana explained to me that most people don't sell it anymore as it is a real pain to package up. They buy it in huge sacks and prepackage it because once it's exposed to the air, it gets damp and goes hard. So most pharmacies can't be bothered to hack at a solid block of salt for 50 baht and therefore don't stock it.

I had tried the Chinese herbal shop route but I was told that Magnesium Sulphate is a Farang medicine, not a Chinese one so they didn't stock it. That route may be a bit hit and miss if you try it.

Thanks pongosnodgrass

I bought 2 kilos today 50 baht per kilo

5th May 2011,

Updated directions to the shop again:

From Sukhumvit head West towards Ploenchit. Staying on Sukhumvit road, once you pass Nana Soi 4, to your left there will be a petrol station on the corner and a 'McDonald's. Next to that is a small chemist shop and next to that is a bigger chemist shop, double fronted. Next to Bully's pub
