Phuket eyed for return of foreign tourists

Government ministries are studying guidelines to open areas of Thailand to foreign tourists, a source at Government House said on Thursday.

 

Representatives of the Tourism and Sports Ministry met with their counterparts at the Interior and Transport ministries to discuss the topic “Safe & Sealed Areas for Tourism”, said the source, adding that Tourism Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn will lead a visit by ministers to Phuket on September 2-4.

 

The ministers will survey opinions of local people and businesses on Phuket reopening for foreign tourists, before sharing the findings with the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration.

 

Thai Airways International (THAI) announced on Thursday it plans to launch charter flights to Phuket from six international destinations in late November this year.

 

The six destinations are Denmark, Germany, Britain, South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong.

 

THAI is also expected to fly charter flight tourists from China to Phuket.

 

The airline’s acting president, Chansin Treenuchagron, said the airline would operate flights twice a month or more on each route based on demand. 

 

Meanwhile, another Government House source said executives of seven local airlines will meet Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha today (August 28) to ask for government assistance amid the impact of the Covid-19 outbreak.

 

The move comes after representatives of several airlines met with Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob to ask for relief measures.

 

Among their proposals were provision of soft loans, and extending the period of reduced jet fuel tax, which is set to expire next month. Jet fuel tax has been cut to Bt0.20 per litre from the normal Bt4.726 per litre.

Will this definatley be with Quarantine? I'm not reading much on details. 

 

To open up without any restrictions would be reckless. I know some have a high labido and are desperate to return, but this needs to be controlled.

Looks like part of Thai Airways restructuring will be for the government to treat it like a golden goose and ensure its used for these special flights to Phuket. You gotta love that it still appears to be some reckless actions ongoing that make all airlines unequal.  When the other have to beg the transport ministry and ask for relief measures it tells me of the inequality, well the story has me believing it is.

Yes it is with quarantine and all the current conditions and problems in the home country. However after a second negative test in Thailand (the first being taken at the airport) people who stay at resort hotels with private beaches will be allowed onto the beach. Yesterday there were reports that these same quarantine hotels were getting loads of cancellations from Thai people who had booked rooms!

Not seeing only 9 flights in the article.  Where did you get this information.  I see destinations of 6 countries and then of course flights from China

I have some questions...

a) does this mean, your "quaranteen" is your holiday?

b) are you allowed to roam freely on the island? Go out? Take excursions or daytrips to Phang Nga Bay fe.?

Which MIGHT actually work, if touroperators are bundeling some attractive packages!

Or will you be confined to your hotel? In which case, this thing is dead in the water! Like a duck...filled with lead!

c) will hotel staff and local inhabbitants also be confined on the island? Because I could see (now jobless) workers in the tourism- industry agreeing with that, but...

Why it would be reckless ?

 

If you believe Thai authorities they have a world class Health care system in place. If so it should be easy for them to deal with 100-500 cases or more per day as other countries in western Europe for example successfully do - they actually handle even more - or are the Thai authorities lying about their capabilities - AGAIN ?, rhetorical question, though.

so your idea of not being reckless is to have up to 500 people a day slowly drowning to death on ventilators with a 50:50 chance of survival?

Who in their right mind is going to visit Thailand and pay a fortune for 3 weeks of quarantine ?  Life is pretty much back to normal in Europe now.  Borders are open, you can visit Spain or Portugal or wherever you want.  

 

Thailand seems to think people care about the virus - wake up - the world is moving on now, people are bored of it - death rates have plummeted while cases go through the roof, its no longer a threat - unless you are over 80 years old or seriously sick anyway.

 

This will be another disaster scheme.....which fails.

The average tourist spends two or three weeks in Thailand.

There must be millions of them waiting to book a 14-days-all-inclusive-quarantaine-holiday I guess. This will save Thailand's tourism surely. The General and I are sure about that.
