Video: Schoolgirl mown down on zebra crossing - driver claims she ran out

Picture: Daily News

A Thai driver told police that he blamed a schoolgirl for running out in front of him

But dash cam evidence now in police hands tells a very different story.

Other vehicles had stopped to allow the M5 girl to cross.

Thirty second footage that was posted on facebook by "Pattarakit Pumpipat" showed the Toyota Vios being driven erratically and fast weaving in and out of other traffic.

Then the student was hit. She was taken unconscious to Nakhon Pathom Hospital on Tuesday where she is in a serious condition.

The home room teacher of the student took the footage of the accident to Phuttamonthon police after the Vios driver surrendered to them.

No charges have yet been made, said Daily News, as the matter is still under investigation.

The driver was named only as "A".

One person viewing the footage can be heard to condemn the driver saying "ay sat" - you animal.

Thai society is not mature enough to have ‘zebra crossings’ the reliance on everyone to ‘do the right thing’ is too much and those crossing the road are too vulnerable - I agree with those posters so

  • Totally agree they just give unwary pedestrians a false sense of security.

They should remove the zebra crossings in Thailand. The most dangerous place to cross the road. I have nearly been run over twice crossing them,

Most drivers don't stop at all. I see this every day at school.

You go to a zebra crossing and it seems that once they see you crossing the road, they accelerate.

Also, whenever crossing a side road, cars coming out of this road never ever let you cross the road.

They probably think that they are superior because if you need to walk, you must be low class.

An all too familiar story. Driving like a maniac in an urban environment,  zero awareness as to what is going on around him and he probably end up getting fined a paltry amount.

this maybe would help to slow down those idiots with their lowered and tuned pick-up trucks.

3 dimensional zebra crossing.

First time I have seen this ad ! but to a Thai driver it appears to mean Jack <deleted> after all some are just learning to pull aside for Ambulances in an emergency situation !

Thai society is not mature enough to have ‘zebra crossings’ the reliance on everyone to ‘do the right thing’ is too much and those crossing the road are too vulnerable - I agree with those posters so far to point out that all Zebra crossings do is give an unwitting pedestrian a false sense of security.

More driver education is needed - Every day needs to have key safety points on as adverts at times of prime time evening TV.

Of course, then there is the ineffective policing and paltry penalties when some drives dangerously.

There will be social medial outrage, but ultimately no lessons will be learned - the driver will be charged with something like ‘dangerous driving’ and charged about about 1000 baht - a Wai to the little girls family and all is forgotten.

BUT... this is not an accident, the guy was speeding through traffic and he sped across a zebra crossing - this was an ‘incident waiting to happen’.

This, I suspect is the underlying reason for much of Thailands traffic woes. Everyone things someone else is below them. There is no consideration for the greater good and the attitudes are ‘screw everyone else’ (outside of my circle).

It comes down to perhaps the single most significant weakness most Thai people have. The pathological fear of losing face. Who cares what people think of you? For those of us with high self esteem, it just does not matter. Sure, close friends and family. But strangers on the street? Who gives a rat's butt about this? It means nothing what they think, nor what they say about you. Nothing, less than zero. They count for nothing. They are just people, and people you do not know, nor will ever see again. Face is rife with self doubt, and by subscribing to this weakness, and man or woman is made a far lesser person. I consider the practice of face to be the polar opposite of the practice of Buddhism, which teaches the need for introspection, contemplation, owning up to a problem, and taking responsibility for issues, problems and tragedies that you create in life.

As many of us know, a percentage of the Thai population lives within fairly small boxes, of social convention, traditions and expectations, especially on the part of the family. That is not a life that some of us choose. Those that are bold and courageous, will find a way to break past conventions, and live a fulfilling life, based on their own choices, independence, and esteem.

They tried them already..but seems it was just a short term fad...maybe the paint didn't last very long

just like the paint used for other road markings  either faded or covered in grime  not that anyone pays much attention to them anyway.

People dont stop for Red Lights here

You can tell by the different door colours, it is not the first time this vios has had an accident!!

Driving like that there was going to be an accident soon anyway, shame it was the schoolgirl crossing the road that took the hit and not a concrete pillar!

the guy is driving like a dick, throw the book at him !

They see Zebra Crossing, as if the Finish Line to a Race!

A Zebra Crossing is a 24/7 prescribed zone of zero tolerance... there are no options!

 - if someone is on the Crossing, then you Stop for them;

and if another car approaching the Lines Stops in front of you

 - NO, he is Not Brake Checking You, for you to speed Around him, swearing at him with your head turned to look at that other drivers eyes...

Such a sad loss of life. My condolences to her family.

It is a shame that they lost their daughter at the hands if an irresponsible fool.

the car hitting the pedestrians were driving much faster

then the rest of the traffic, to the point she was driving slalom

to take over in an ever increasing frenzy

Zebra crossings mean nothing here. You even have drivers stopped on the zebra crossings when they're stuck in traffic.

In the UK, where I'm from, you treat the pedestrian as if they always have right of way. You always have to be careful in case someone runs out into the road, etc. Driving means always paying attention. Taking your eyes off the road for a second is never an excuse. And if you're concentrating properly when driving, you can avoid accidents, etc, 9.9 times out of 10.

At my apartment, there is one main entrance for cars and people. There's enough room for people to walk either side of where people drive in and out. The problem is the security guards treating drivers (I'm talking residents to pick-up drivers delivering packages or doing repairs, etc) as if they're some kind of VIP. The security guards at my place know I live there. Yet they've stopped me in my tracks a couple of times as I've been walking across the entrance first because a car is approaching. I've told them a couple of times that I was walking here first and the car can wait for me. They just think I'm mad, but at least they don't try to stop me anymore.

This most definitely isn't a pedestrians paradise.

The drivers name is "A" what, dirt bag low life

I do hate it when the reporter fails to finish the sentence :post-4641-1156693976:

Or at stop signs either up north here.  Or know the correct and legal way to use traffic circles

You have more chance stood in the middle of the M5 than a zebra crossing here it's a sickening basket case of daily slaughter ????

Little bit premature..........unless there has been further developments?

Come to think of it, when I watched the training video at DoT last week there was no mention at all about how a driver should approach or behave at zebra crossings.... and I DID pay full attention.

where & when did/does it read, that she died?

but then , if she dies at hospital, it was not a death at the roadside; therefore the death would not be Tallied up as a road death...

I am always really worried when I drive my car or ride my bike in CM of being rear ended when I stop at the crossings for pedestrians.
