Hi all,

this is the first look after installing Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn":

Just took a first look at Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn".

I installed MS Virtual PC 2007 on my Acer Laptop because I've to test it with different os. Getting Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn" yesterday so I installed this OS under Virtual PC 2007 on the Laptop.

The Installation was taking some time but this for sure because of Virtual PC!

After the Installation was finish, I was need to set the important task, like Password, Netwaork settings and so on to first. Finally I get everything to run include Network and Internet connection.

Many things is like Vista! Something is more easy and others more difficult but on the first look it's looks like that the security is a bit higher as on Server 2003. the Version I installed here is the Web-Edition which is anyway more limited than the Enterprise. The Enterprise I'll install within the next few days to test out. But not any Multimedia staff, Wallpapers and so. Running under Virtual PC with 512 MB memory was a little slow but OK. Ms recommend 1 GB but better 2 GB memory.

Just need to keep in mind that this OS is still Beta 3!

At the first look it's OK!

Will keep informing special if errors occurs.

Thanks for the update. Will be looking at it in a few days myself. I have VMWare 5.5 so not sure if it will run under it. Also have a core2duo E6600 and 2GB memory so should be interesting to see how it performs under my new platform.

Today I installed Microsoft Windows Server "Longhorn" on a Desktop Computer.

The spec of the Desktop Computer:

Mainboard: ASUS P4GD1

CPU: Intel P4 3,2 GHz

Memory: 1 GByte

Harddisk: Seagate SATA 80 GB

AGP: ASUS 9550 128 MB

CD-Rom/DVD: Pioneer

NIC: Marvell 100/1000

The installation was taking 18 minute!! :o I was surprised how fast!

Except the AGP and Printer, all drivers was installed correctly. Internet works.

Restarting the first time in full User Mode, you need to configure the Basic settings like Password, Network IP and others. But its Menu driven and quiyte easy.

Than the setup of the Server Roles will need to be done. The first Step is to install the IIS 7! But it's also looks quite easy.

Later I'll see that the setup I've done will work. I just finish with the IIS 7 and will now start to setup an Web-Server and an FTP-Server for testing over the Internet.

Until right now there not any problems.

If the first look will continou, I'll setup an Web-Server for public use for to test the Security, Relibility and others. The speed looks ok and fast for the used system. Compare the installed same OS under Virtual PC on my Acer Laptop (Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66, 2 GB RAM, 120 GB hdd SATA) , the speed on the Acer is like a Turtel!

I don't know how many legit Keys MS will give out but for those of you who interested to try, i suggest to signup fast. The Key can be used til April 2008, 1 Year!

On my laptops it's have take mre than 40 minute! But after that the installation is very fast finish. On the desktop everything was very fast.

CPU P4 3.2 AMD Dual 3800

Memory 1 GByte Memory 2 GByte

PCI-X 128 MB PCI-X 512 MB

HDD SATA 80 GB HDD SATA2 120 GB

Speed:

downl. 56 MB 22 min 32 min

copy 2 GB 2.4 min 3.2 min

To open a file in NetObjects 10 for Webdesign with size of complete 900 MB

Longhorn 1 1/2 min Vista 4 min

Server: AMD X2 3800+, HD SATA 300MHz/16MB

LAN: 1 Gbps

Client: Intel Dual Core 2 E6600, HD SATA 300MHz/16MB

Copy 1GB Server > Client

Windows Server 2003 Datacenter: 2’20”

Vista Server Beta Datacenter: 50”

Not bad, Vista Server with 1Gbps Support! :-)

Latest News from Microsoft about the "Longhorn" Server:

Longhorn becomes Windows Server 2007

Microsoft has decided that its experimental server software, which has been working under the codename Longhorn, will be shipped under the name "Windows Server 2007".

A document titled "Hosting and Consuming WCF Services"on Vole's website, which was spotted by Steven Bink, uses the name Windows Server 2007 several times for the next generation server.

According to Arnnet.com, while the name "Windows Server" was never really in dispute, the 2007 tag always was. Some punters had thought that the software would ship so late it would be called Windows Server 2008.

Vole has said that it will not release the official name until it gets around to releasing the beta 3 version of the software. We are currently on Beta two.

Update: Although Longhorn Beta 3 has in fact been released, the new name has still not been officially announced.
