Unthinkable a year ago! Video shows how COVID-19 has turned Walking Street in to a ghost town

It would have been something absolutely unthinkable a year ago. 

 

Not just driving down Walking Street on a Saturday evening but seeing Pattaya's famous entertainment area almost deserted.

 

But that is exactly what popular vlogger and blogger "Dan About Thailand" found on Saturday night. 

 

His 1 minute 18 second video said it all. 

 

There were a few bright lights and one or two people milling about, but it was a largely unhindered drive down the once thronging street from one end to the other. 

 

His piece was titled "Deserted Walking Street in Pattaya on a Saturday Evening".

 

It didn't need commentary - it was only too plain to see that Pattaya is suffering in the wake of the lack of foreign tourists post-pandemic. 

 

A year ago cars would have been banned.

 

Even a walk would have taken a long time because of the crowds.

on another note, allowing cars on WS is the dumbest thing this city could have ever come up with,

i truly hope the guilty will burn in hell.

why not rename it driving street while you are at it destroying this iconic street

Good, just on eye sore less in this country.

Plenty of places are busy. But the street is not full of Chinese and Indian strollers.  But many bars are busy

Would make a good set for an apocolpyse zombie movie.

Is it different from many town centres around the world now?

I took a walk down there myself last week and it still isn't easy... you have to worry about cars if in the road, and where there are pavements, they are blocked by the usual selfish motorcycle parking. Foot traffic is back to being low-life in WS.

 

That's as virus free as that street has been in decades. 

Didn't we see plans a few months ago to totally revamp that area?  This would be a good time as it would create many jobs...

"Unthinkable" doesn't seem to be much of an obstacle or hindrance here, if you think about it...

Agreed it is very quiet but I bet my life on it this was taken before 9pm. The main gogo's that are open like Palace and Pin Ups had no hello girls outside and busy places like Ibar and 808 no one milling outside. These video's can tell whatever storey you want depending on the time they are filmed.

he should have been there 10 minutes after he took the video, it was rammed.

Never mind the great TAT is coming to Thailand's rescue. From next week 900 tourists a week will be allowed in via quarantine prison to revive all of Thailand's tourism woes.

It's not the virus that did it:  It's the extreme paranoical reaction to the virus that did it.

I've looked at pictures posted by many people on Facebook claiming how busy places like Insomnia are. Enlarge the pictures, all of them have the bars busy with freelancer Thai girls and maybe 3 or 4 Foreigners...no profit there, the freelancers get their drinks at 50/60 Baht instead of the 180/200 if with a foreigner or paid by a Foreigner..and the girls will only buy one drink.

How many people do you need before they are 'milling about'?

It's not just Walking Street...all of Beach and Second roads are like this. The central Pattaya tourist district is basically dead...you walk around and it looks like a neutron bomb went off...the buildings are still standing but there are no people around. East Pattaya is still a hive of activity, however.

If titled walking street, why do they let cars driven on it?

Better to knock it down

At least they could use the opportunity to fix the left turn from beach road to make it safer and make traffic flow better once the world opens up again.
