Sudden Deafness In Both Ears

Featured Replies

Was fine for both weeks I was in Thailand - enjoyed Songkran (for a few days, anyway). A bit of a rough flight home to Australia - a few 'air pockets' just prior to landing. Just after I got off the plane, I was noticibly deaf in both ears.

Thought this would clear itself up in an hour or two - instead, it is getting worse.

I also had a very productive cough - which I leave cleared up with Lemsip liquid cough syrup.

Visited local doctor, thinking I had Sensorineural Hearing Loss. Was told that is extremely rare and only usually affects one ear.

What I probably do have is Barotrauma.

I have an appointment in 3 weeks' time to see an ENT Ear, Nose & Throat) specialist in case I have perforated eardrums - but hopefully the problem will clear itself up by then.

Yes it is probably baratrauma.

But as a Doctorate of Audiology, I advise you seek immediate ENT intervention. I REPEAT IMIDEATE intervention.

If you do have SSNHL (Sudden Sensory Neural Hearing Loss) that can be medicated, you must be medicated within 2 weeks of onset. Other wise, your chances of recovery are very low. You will not know what caused the hearing loss, baratrauma, CMV, Herpes etc. unless you hurry up and get to an ENT. Do not waste your time at a GP or an emergency room.

If you can be medicated for the SSNHL you will probably be given acyclovir or valtrex, coupled with a steroid.

Please go see an ENT, ASAP.

There is a link regarding SSNHL, and there is tons of information about on the net. You have nothing to loose by getting in to an ENT ASAP, you possiblay have a life time of poor hearing if you do not.

Good luck.
